Did Model A's come with vin tags?
So my 67 Dodge Monaco comes with a vin number and a fender tag, which once deciphered, lists a wealth of information about my car.
Did A's come with anything equivalent? Don't know so's I'm asking! Glenn (newbie) |

Engine number stamped on the engine and on the left side frame rail just below the cowl section.

You can get a good idea of when the engine was built.....but that's about it...

Re: Did Model A's come with vin tags?
No chassis number on our As and boy, does that cause lots of furrowed brows when we try to register one. The moderns employed at the registration office can't get their heads around a car not having a chassis number.
I had one a few years ago who produced a piece of paper and said "Go and get this number stamped on the car so we can register it." When I asked where they wanted the number put, the answer was "On the front left suspension tower". It was beyond them to comprehend that this car had no suspension tower - it was a beam axle. "A what?" "Go get yer manager!" I stamp the engine number onto the chassis just where the LHD steering box would have gone.

Re: Did Model A's come with vin tags?
I had a "vin" number printed on a plate, vin number being the number registered on my title, and placed it on my firewall inside the motor compartment. Hope this will work if and when any DMV person may want to see it. Due to the fact I changed the motor since it was registered, I felt I need something to show if I may need it.

Re: Did Model A's come with vin tags?
The VIN did not exist until sometime in the 60's or 70's when a new and "better" law was passed that required a series of letters and numbers that covered all possible codes for identifying features of the vehicle. Before that we just had serial numbers.
The change happened before the young 'uns at the DMV were born. On the Model A the number was put on the side if the block and on the frame rail just behind the firewall on the driver side. The frame number is hard to see. |

I once had a Cabriolet that had the engine number stamped on the side of the frame rail.

Re: Did Model A's come with vin tags?
When I restored my Tudor, I stamped the frame number on the part of the frame that is exposed right adjacent to the battery. There is just enough of the frame rail visible with the floorboard removed to stamp the number.
I did this so if I was ever questioned about the frame number, I could lift up the floorboard and it is visible. This may also help the next owner when he goes to get it registered. This is a real problem in some states where they want to see the number stamped on the frame. That is what I did, Chris W. |

Acronyms drive me crazy
VIN = Vehicle Identification Number
OK first it is not always just a number. It can have letters as well as numbers. So it should be VIC = Vehicle Identification Code. Second VIN Number is redundant. It would stand for Vehicle Identification Number Number or VINN. Then you could have VINN Number or Vehicle Identification Number Number Number .......> BTW (oops I meant to say By The Way) the Vehicle Identification Numbers were first introduced in 1954. Up until 1981 there was no standard and every manufacturer used their own system. Bob |
