Default Anyone bought one of these from Mikes?

Mikes Afordable offers a plain steel roof top for 1930 CCPUs for $135 plus shipping.

Their Part Number is SR-501-A. Page 388 in their catalog.

Has anyone here bought one? How did it fit? Any other problems?

Thanks Gang!

Larry

Now why would anyone on a restoration forum buy a steel insert?

YO' Bear Dog,
Buster T. here. Ol' Bill tole me to tole you, make sure you have a flat, thin RUBBER gasket around the outer part of the cap. If it has only the copper seal, it won't seal good enough, to "SUCK" the water back up frum the overflow tank ggoody.
FERGIT about 'lectric fans, about as useless as sharpnin' your straight razor on a RED BRICK.
Iffin you backflush ONCE a year & poke a 160 thermostat in the upper end uf the UPPER hose, you'll be COOL to go!
Buster T.

Who said that it's a restoration forum? I see posts about alternators, LED lights, overdrives, different transmissions, high compression heads, juice brakes, the list goes on and on.

We will stay focused on restoration over here. Hot rods and customs are for the hamb.

Just be happy with what we have so far.

If we cross the invisible line the post gets deleted by Ryan or the other administrators.

That's what I thought too, is this steel insert the replacement for these late cabs or is it a hod rod part?

Wild guess but I'm guessing it will fit about as good as any other reproduction sheet metal part fits pretty good needs final tweaking and should stick with a good original to save time...

Hi Larry,

My guess as far as answers to your (3) questions thus far appear to be:

Any other problems? None whatsoever.

How did it fit? Don't know yet.

Has anyone here bought one? No.

Hope this helps.

Did you buy one? It's drop shipped from Howells. How long did you wait for it? How does the steel look? Gauge?

Maybe jumping on anyone that doesn't follow prudent rule book restoration is going to be the normal. Any talk other than approved restoration or new ideas of restoration is where the line that we cross that either makes or breaks our threads.

Hi Larry,

I never bought one either.

My guess is you may be the first person on this Forum to gamble to buy one.

And, some may be waiting for you to give the "first" review.

The REAL Steeltop trucks were introduced in August of '31 and went into production in I believe September of that year. They were manufactured by Budd. The top went from the top of the door all the around to the top of the other door. It had an integral visor and the gutters were spot welded in place. Top was nailed into the rear wood bow and used 6 (I believe) counter sunk screws to be affixed to the windshield header. The center of the top was supported by two stamped steel bows.

Let us know how it works. I have thought about putting a steel top on my 31 Coupe, so it would be water tight, then for looks put the vinyl over the top. I always worry about water leaking just enough to cause rust without being obvious until its too late.

Never bought one either but there are plenty of complaints about Howells so use caution.
