Which way to advance
Which way do I turn the distributor cam to advance the timing......clockwise or counter clockwise?

its late in the day but i think you would turn it clockwise to advance the timing. the cam turns counter clockwise so clockwise would make things happen sooner.

rotating the cam / rotor counterclockwise will advance the spark
clockwise to retard the spark |

It gets a little confusing because you would turn the distributor clockwise to advance, but you cannot do that because the pin in the head locks it in place. Therefore you have to move the rotor (cam) counter clockwise.
