Default Windshield Blocked by Gascap...

Should the windshield open all the way without contacting the fuel cap?

If I remove the cap I can open the window the rest of the way. Perhaps I have a non-OEM item. I just learned that the gasket of the original should be leather, but I don't remember what mine has.

Yup. Sounds like your header over the windshield is going bad. You might get lucky and be able to tighten up the windshield upper frame screws.

Might be your header, but some of the repro gas caps are too high.

I had a reproduction gas cap that would not let the windshield move past the cap because it sat to high . I put a original on and the clearance was just right . I had all new header and everything was fitting right except the repo gas cap .

I looked at a coupe with the problem ,compared it to mine and the reproduction header wasn't cut the same as original and put the hinge area too low,

Repo windshield hinge rubber gasket can cause an ill fitting windshield.

My cap has a cork gasket and not leather. I may try a more vintage style cap to see what happens.

I was going to get a tank filler screen but I can't tell if I should get the threaded one or the one with the tabs.

My gas cap is about 3/4" tall and the windshield clears just fine.

Early tanks used a threaded screen (flame arrester) but changed to tabs, then went back to threads, not sure of the exact timeline. Inside the neck of my '30 tank are two slots stamped near the opening for two of the tabs to twist into. Otherwise feel around for a thread groove.

I got one that just drops in, but it rocks side to side. I might cut tabs on the top to hold it in place.
