Default pitman ball 28phaeton

hello- read all prior posts on ball rfurbishing- question: when using the ball on stud type repair A3411W, it is said to fail at times. what are reasons for failure- is it a crack of the surrounding rim, failure of weld to hold stud in hole such that the stud pulls out, or other?
my machist tells me turning down the existing ball to a stud is very difficult [and then inserting a ferrule easy part of taSK].
i know i can send arm in to Snyders. thanks

If you want a good reballing job and save a few bucks, sent them to A&L Parts Specialties in Connecticut. I believe pretty much all parts suppliers have A&L do their reballing, as they have the tools to correctly do it. I had three sets done by them. I don't think welding balls on the arms is near as safe as turning down the worn ball and pressing on hardened balls and TIG welding the top as an extra safety factor, as they do.

Have the worn spots welded, and then grind and file the ball as round as you can. That way, the part will still be one piece and not breakable. The ball does not have to be perfectly round.

I welded and filed all 4 of mine. It's very time consuming, and I'll send them in for reballing the next time.

The ball replacement, while helping with the steering, is a critical safety piece. We recommend having a certified welder do the operation. On past Summer Tours we have seen failures on these parts when a person welded their own or had a buddy weld it for them. A failure of this part means you have lost steering control and is a very dangerous situation.
