Default Have You Ever Seen.....

a 1936 Ford four door sedan with a rumble seat? I was reading my V-8 Times and saw the story of the four seat 1935-1936 Ford Cabriolet and it reminded me of a story that one of my air force buddies told me. He swears he owned as his first car a four door sedan with a rumble seat. He paid a whopping $25 for it in 1953. He grew up in Brockton, MA and attended school with Rocky Marciano’s brothers. He is a pretty straight shooter and swears this to be true. When I asked him about the spare tire he immediately said it was underneath the car. The trunk was a hump back but it opened up to a rumble seat with leather seats. It had a step on the bumper to enter the rumble seat. His sister got rid of all of his pictures when he was in the air force.

I just finished talking to him by phone to verify this and he stands by it. Have you ever seen one?

Shadetree, your friend's memory has played tricks on him. There was never a Ford Fordor Touring with a rumbleseat. There were, however, coupes with optional rumbleseat, up to and including 1936.

Mike, Even though some foriegn assembly plants marched to a different drummer, I'd bet the only way the "never" would apply would be a one of a kind custom built car for some middle east oil baron to carry his female passengers outside the car proper.

Not quite a '36 Fordor with a rumble seat, but just to say 'never say'; this is a Matford about '37 [ French made Ford V8] with the V860.
Basically a Ford but Europeanised bodywork etc. The English V8 Model 62[ '36 to '39] & later V8 Pilots used the same body shell.

Thank you for that, Tudor, in reading your posted page, I discovered the origin of the Ford name Matford. I hadn't known or thought about why it was so named. Below is another example of the Matford, a very stylish 1939 model having distinct influence from the 1937 American Ford.

It's possible that an after-market manufacturer made a rumble seat conversion for sedans although I've never seen one on a "fat fender". In the '50's a company built a "rumble seat" conversion for the '57 T-Bird called the "Birds Nest" I've only seen one installed on a car and that was on Long Island in the early '80's however, I do remember seeing ads for them in car magazines from the '50's.

I've not heard of that one. But until 2 days ago, I had never heard of a '36 4 door sedan delivery either.

G'Day Django,
That '36 four door sedan delivery looks a hell of a lot like a hearse that my dad had back in the mid 60s. A mate of mine now has it now and he is street rodding it.My mates wife doesn't like it being called a hearse so it known in his shed as a loooong delivery. The chassis has be extended by about 3 feet and it did run the original diff with the torque tube.It had a 3 foot jack shaft to marry up to the original gearbox.
From the front doors forward was original Ford. The top, side doors, which of course didn't open, the rear door, which was a lot wider that the ones in the photos, and rear fenders were all coach built. I will try and get some pics of it and get a ten year old kid to post them for me.

We should get something something going with pictures of weird looking Fords. Certainly the four door with a rumble seat would take top honors...

The trunk area of the 1936 hump back 4-door sedans would have been easy to modify. It would be interesting to see if they ever modified more than just a few. The spare would've had to have been hung under there like the later model pickups were. I've definitely never seen or heard of such a modification but it could have been done by a coach builder or a crafty body man.

When you look at those custom made stainless steel bodied cars, you can imagine anything is possible.

My friend Norm bought this car from a neighbor lady. She bought a `46 Nash I think is what he told me and wanted to sell her `36 Ford. I laughed when he first told me this and I told him there was no such animal. I know it would be a rare combination, but I have to believe him.

That’d be right. A loooong and slow last trip to the cemetery.

Here is a rare 4 dr. 1936 Touring sedan with a full bustle style trunk lid (sorry lt's Not a rumble lid). It was $20 more than the flatback model. The tail lights were on the trunk lid, and the spare tire was inside the trunk. Don't know how many Ford made that year, but I'm sure, not many.
Here is a picture that I believe Al Casteen posted on the web.
