Default rear axle

I have a '48 Ford F-1. Is the rear axle a Dana or something else? Will a '53 F100 rear axle fit the '48 without mod's?
Thanks

In 48 & 49 they were Dana 41 types. Starting in late 1949 they went to the Dana 44 type thru 1952 production. I thing the 53s had the Ford type axle but I'll have to check. The Dana 41s & 44s were also used in the 49 thru 51 Mercury models but they had the spring mounts located a little differently. Many parts are interchangeable. Some Ford station wagons and police cars with heavy duty equipment had the Dana axles as well. My old Hollander interchange manual does not list a direct fit with the 1953 Ford F-100 but it can be made to work. Spring hangers are probably different and I'm not sure about the width. Brakes are a little different but not by much. Starting later in 57, the 9-inch would be a better choice. There are a lot of old Danas still out there though.

Thanks rotorwrench. My rear axle had a small wreck! One of the bolts that hold the ring gear to the carrier broke off! I got the broken piece out and need to find two new bolts and the lock tab. Got any?

I don't have any spares but you can check with this outfit. http://store.midwestjeepwillys.com/r...--44--53-.html

Kaiser-Frazer, Studebaker, & Willys/Jeep also used the 41s & 44s. This outfit lists the lock plates for the Dana types but they might have the bolts too. A good grade 8 bolt the correct length will work. 3/8" - 24 X 1 1/8" is the size FoMoCo lists for the 48/50 F1.
