69a Block Oil Gallery Crack. Centre bearing
69a block being checked has revealed a crack showing in centre bearing at top side running up to under side of cam bearing area.
Is this able to be recovered by stiching methods or similar ? Or to source another block? Appreciate any experience or assistance on this one. Phil NZ |

Re: 69a Block Oil Gallery Crack. Centre bearing
Phil, I've never seen a crack there, but there's lots I've not seen....
I take it this is the hot engine you recently bought off trademe? Any cracks through main bearing webs can be considered fatal. sorry!

Sorry to hear about this. I agree with Brian comments about it being fatal.

Can you post a picture of the crack? Maybe not the end of the world?
Thanks John |

I’ve got a few blocks I swear I’m gonna put right in the middle of the lawn and plant flowers in ‘em. I also would like to see some pics and comments on how this would happen. Sorry to hear about this one......Mark

Re: 69a Block Oil Gallery Crack. Centre bearing
I've heard reports about cracks in the center main bearing web but I've never actually seen a block with a crack there -- just about everywhere else but not there. Would be nice to see a photo.

Hence need to have block checked both crack wise and pressure tested where it also failed. This has been the good advice passed on from this Forum. I thank all for input as always. Phil NZ |

Re: 69a Block Oil Gallery Crack. Centre bearing
Well due to a very very helpful Barn member in NZ I believe I will have a good replacement block to put all this lot back into.
This original engine, just rebuilt and ready to go was far from it. ie water leaks, crack in block, the quoted flathead Ross pistons upon inspection are dome top which will fit nice with the new Edelbrock heads so there are a couple of plus items here. Phil NZ |

Phill, what cc heads are you using, and bore and stroke.

Re: 69a Block Oil Gallery Crack. Centre bearing
Edelbrock 74cc heads. Bore 3 5/16 plus 30 thou. Stroke: 4.125"
Cam: 5T is being ground to 8CM grind. Will be running a Holley 4 barrel 390cfm on a Speedway Inlet manifold. Scat gear with dome top Ross Pistons. Phil NZ |

Re: 69a Block Oil Gallery Crack. Centre bearing
Hey Phil: I've been curious about that manifold - looks like it is a more modern design for the standard Holley square bore base. This would seem to be a better setup than using an older 4-barrel design from the 50's that is not really setup for our modern carbs. I'd love to see what the manifold plenum area looks like - if you happen to have the manifold, could you take some pictures of the top-plate on the manifold as well as with the plate removed so we can see the plenum area. Would love it if it was a good dual-plane design with the correct port mappings (given the firing order of the flathead). Take care and good luck with your "new" engine!
Your engine should run really well . . . but I'd sure put a bit more CAM into it! LOL I know, you'll have more torque off a stop and more lower-end power, but I can't help myself with putting cams into these engines. Maybe a 1007B??? |

Re: 69a Block Oil Gallery Crack. Centre bearing
https://www.speedwaymotors.com/shop/...-1-12-313-5536.
Its a Speedway Single Plane inlet manifold as for 48 to 53 Flathead. This manifold does not allow use of mech fuel pump, electric one required. Presently have manifold set up on bench for fitting up of single wire genr and cooling fan as mounted below genr. Cam well its for street use and yes more torque off stop and more low end power. Re: 69a Block Oil Gallery Crack. Centre bearing
Phil , have you worked out the comp ratio,
on the 276 eng I have on the stand with 66cc heads, 8.4 -1, cranking psi is around 165 -170. Starts OK on 6v Lawrie |
