Default A big pile of flathead motors, found a co.plete 59L and maybe a 40 mercury motor

Cleared out a storage building. 35 motors, most complete , some bare blocks and a few y blocks. As a nice 56 chevy 265 with a 40 ford transmission still on it. Poking around i found one is a 59L with a nice 2 piece oil pan. But one that is more interesting is a 24 stud motor, has A heads, and has a mercury pressure plate which i thought were 49/50 era. The story of it is that it was with a 40 mercury 4dr convertible. I got the rear which is a 3.54 with the one piece pinion gear/driveshaft. How do you tell is this motor is the "mercury" 99A or 239 ? Attached are some pictures

The one I have is stamped "99" on top of the block under the intake towards the front of the block.

No, its just a later 49 50 mercury pressure plate on a early motor. Attached is a picture of 2 comeplete 49 50 mecury motors, you can see them a little clearer.

Skidmarks:

Re prewar 221 vs 239 blocks --see post:

"Engine block ID pictures"

39-42 239 have a circular center water transfer port. 221 does not.
externally they look the same---maybe the 99 stamp but could be fake-added.
