Gus' AA Doodlebug

Hello!

Nate here, Gus is my 16 year old son.

A while back Gus decided he wanted a project. He's been working a lot with his grandpa and has saved a bit of money. We live on a small farm in NE Kansas and he sees his friends running around on UTVs and such. He said he wanted something fun that he could work on and drive around the farm.

He had a good start on a T speedster because when out good friend Jay Sweet moved from Abilene to New Hampshire he gave Gus a rolling chassis and we found a roadster cowl.

Another friend (Chester) had stopped by our house one day and said he had a bunch of A parts if we ever needed anything. One Saturday a few weeks ago he decided it was time for a visit.

We thought maybe some A running gear would be good for a speedster, something he could learn to drive a manual transmission and related to modern car controls.

When we got to Chesters house he had some of the parts we needed, engine, transmission and rear axle but he also had a doodlebug. He gave us a good price and Gus decided to put the T on the back burner and go for it.

He's working on getting it running and building a box/seat. As we go I'll post progress. I'm proud of him for wanting to put some work into this thing and he's anxious to drive it, it shouldn't be long.

If anyone has a suggestion for 20" tires that won't break the bank let us know!

How is the engine? Does it have 2 transmissions?

Yeah, it's killer.

Engine has good compression, we're working on ignition stuff but it should fire no problem. Just the one transmission, might not be too good for plowing

If it is an AA it probably has a four speed, 1st is pretty low.

Get a kick out of the out house, pretty fancy. New roof, Eat Beef sign, oversized barn roof vent. Rain Gutters?


What is the old iron Tractor? Looks like it runs, has a newer pipe/exhaust.

Thanks! yeah, the outhouse has better gutters than the real house. It was there when we moved in so I can't take credit but we love it.

I love old iron, my dad collected old Massey's. And had a M and super M. They want to run, keep the gas clean/fairly fresh, don't let them sit unused for long periods (6 months or longer), put a can over the exhaust to keep critters and rain out - and they seem to always immediately start. Yours has great "Patina", looks like the metal work etc. is nice and straight. Old iron are like Model A's, food for the soul when driving and fun to drive.

Right! We joke that everything on this farm looks like a historical reenactment because out stuff is old and crusty but I wouldn't have it any other way. The old stuff just works!
