Default Motometer question

I can't figure out how the Motometer is supposed to work. My overflow tube terminates in the radiator neck about 1/2 inch from the bottom of the neck. It looks like the Motometer "button" is about 3/4" above that.

It seems to me that it would only measure water temperature if it is expanding faster that it was overflowing.

think of it as a thermometer mounted on the window of your house. it does not need to be submerged to read the temp.

Mine worked well, even though it wasn't submerged. Water really churns around there when reved up, rev it up & observe!! Also, when cruising steady & you see the Moto-Meter go up & down in regular cycles, like maybe every 2 or 3 minutes, YOU ARE LOW ON WATER!!!!!
If your little red line ever gets "broken" or separated apart, don't panic, partly cover your radiator until lower RED touches the upper RED & they'll "HOOK" up & be one RED again. One guy swung it around on a rope to try to get the REDS together again & whacked the QUAIL Moto-Meter on his bumper & BROKE IT +*#@%@_+*%#$ Who says, Model A's can't be FUN? Look up "FUN" in your "BIG" dictionary! Bill W.

This forum often helps out this "old kid on the block" too. I learn something new almost every day here.

I learned something too. I didn't think about the temp probe being above the overflow tube......
And I didn't know that they only told you the temp once the water turned to steam......
