Default How to remove bonded brake linings

Does anyone have a good method of removing bonded brake linings from brake shoes? I suspect heat would work, but if there is an easier way, I would like to hear about it. The linings are really bonded tight to the shoes. Thanks for any help.

When I let a couple older cars just set for a year or two I found the bonded linings had come loose on their own.

I "think" the pros used some sort of oven?? Would a self cleaning oven remove them?? (I do live alone!) Bill W.

That is an idea Bill....I wonder what temperature they bond at?
How hot does the "self cleaning" get too?

The big question for Rusty is...will Diane let Rusty do this? LOL
The smell ?

When I was heating the Aluminum heads in the oven too change
the valve guides(at home), Helen wasn't too thrilled!
The joint smelled!

I don't know "how hot" but surely hotter than Hades! I restored a collectible cast iron skillet & a cast Pannini Press & it removed ALL the crud & left ONLY a slightly rust colored powder, that wiped off with a dry rag! You got any unusual cast iron cooking gear that you would part with?? Bill W.

My wife is leaving to see the grandchildren in Portland, OR today, so maybe I can try the oven thing. I think a self cleaning oven gets up to about 550 or 600 degrees. I thought maybe a torch would work. Brakes can get pretty hot, so it seems like it would take a lot of heat to unbond the linings.

We used a torch to heat them up, it worked pretty well but took some chipping to get them all cleaned off.

My outdoor grill, where I do ribs, steaks, chicken and brats??? OH NO!! Those old brake shoes go in the kitchen oven, where they belong.

If you use a torch, I would assume you would heat the metal on the shoes behind the lining - correct? It would seem if you heated the linings, it wouldn't do much to loosen them from the shoes. Since my wife is now off on her week long trip to Portland, there will be plenty of time to air the house out if the lining smell when they are heated. I just hope I don't mess up the oven, she would probably notice that.

I wonder if an induction heater would work. I have seen them in "hot plate" configuration, and the temp setting goes up to 450-degrees. The plate actually does not get hot, but the part does.

Just a thought.

Years ago,I worked in a shop that bonded there own brake shoes.I would heat up the back of the shoe with the oxy-acet torch until the lining fell off.It does make a big stink! To bond the new linings I would take a thin metal around the pair of shoes after the bonding glue had been applied to them & tighten to the band with a turn buckle then they were put in a special oven to be bonded.

Won't work, Rusty! Them women got a nose that's like a computerized FOX! When you go to bed, she'll say, "The sheets & pillows smells like BURNED Model A brakes"!! Well it's better than if she smelled some unknown $2.00 perfume! Bill W.

Well, I found that putting them in the oven doesn't work. I put them in the oven for 2 hours and all I got was a bad smell. I cranked up the temperature to 550, but nothing happened (except the bad smell). I have a week for the smell to dissipate before my wife returns from her trip. I can still smell it this morning. I ended up cutting the lining off with my bandsaw. There is a little of the lining left on the shoes, but not much. I hope to sandblast it off if the snow ever goes away. We got 5 more inches last night here in the Twin Cities. Will it ever end!!!

Well....this stinks.

Time to open all the windows and air the place out...maybe Bill can come
and help you clean up.

Weather report...5" of snow in Minnesota(global warming?).....California, we
turned on the "swampers" at work yesterday..89 degrees.
