Default what tools to carry

I tend to be tool heavy. but is there a min tool list I should carry? what about changing tires is there a modern jack that is prefered? I would like to limit my tools to a mililatary canvas tool bag.

One thing I found out by experience while on a tour last fall, make sure you carry a fan belt and with it, have an extension for your socket that will extend under your generator (alternator) so you can take the bolt loose on the generator. Maybe other people know how to get the bolt loose and tightened without this but so far this is all I have found that does the trick.

As far as jacks go, I like the ones Henry provided. Because of the high frame. those old time jacks seems to work best for me. You can wind them up or down by hand quicker than a modern jack.

Socket set, screw drivers, adjustable wrench, flashlight. That is about all you need for tools.

I carry a set of combo wrenches, a socket set, a couple of screw drivers, a test light, and a feeler gauge set. A jack, handle, and a crank. I figure thats enough to get me home. And I carry this for a car that hasn't been more than ten miles from my garage yet!

I carry a cell phone, I don't want to become road kill working on an "A" model on the side of the road.
80 years ago, I would carry the tools that came with the car.

You could just as easily become roadkill sitting in your A waiting for that tow truck. Most roadside repairs can be quick or at least quick enough so you can limp home or to a better repair spot. The last time I called a tow truck it took them 4 hours to "find" me and I was at the intersection of interstate 5 and a state highway. Be smart when you pull over and get off the road as far as possible. Look around and ahead. Try to pull over in a good spot. Most of the engine repairs are on the passenger side not the road side anyway. If its a tire be prepared work quick, if you have a passenger have them "spot" traffic for you.
