Recently when driving my ‘30 closed cab pick-up I am hearing a “ticking” sound coming from the engine at cruising speed when the engine gets up to temperature. It’s not like a knock like a rod knock. Any ideas?

Its about to blow !

Try to locate the noise. A cheap stethoscope, wooden dowel, etc will help.

Its probably valve lash or timing gear noise.

Kidding about the blow.

I had a similar situation and could not find the source of the noise. After an accident and replacing the front end of the car I found the problem. About 1/3 number of teeth on the fiber came gear were broken or chipped. Engine ran fine. replaced cam gear with aluminum (also replaced crank gear but it seemed OK) Ticking noise gone!

One can check the camshaft timing gear by removing the side timing gear cover.

I would take a look at the timing gear, also long shot if your running an original steel fan get rid of it and hang it on the garage wall

Maybe a exhaust leak, Had one drive me nuts till i finally located it.

Does the tick increase speed with the engine? In other words do the ticks get closer together as the engine RPM increases? Or do they stay the same as the engine RPM increases? Figuring that out can narrow down the possible causes.

Cracked original style fan? Easy to check and rule out.

Maybe it is valve noise. Model A s all have valve clicking at idle. If it is noisy,mayby the valves need adjusted.

Sounds like you have a gremlin with a hammer in the engine. Take the hammer off the little #$%^@#.
Seriously, I think we need an answer to the question about the ticking speeding up with engine revs before we can get serious but as a starting point, I suggest taking the fan belt off and seeing if the noise is still there. If not, the source will be the generator or water pump.

I had a fan belt that was the source also, don't overlook it.

Try retarding your spark. If the ticking goes away it's spark knock.
