stuck second/high trans shaft
I'm rebuilding my trans tower and the send/high shaft is stuck.
I can't move it forwards or backwards or rotate it. Anyone have any suggestions on how to remove it? |

Re: stuck second/high trans shaft
Make sure the shifter is in neutral. Grab the second/high shaft close to the front of the top with vice grips, or use a brass drift and tap with a dead low hammer.
I first soaked the top in lacquer thinner, to degrease, then in rust sol. Then kroil. Is this a unit that came out of a barn? Or fresh off a running vehicle? I also open up the plug for the detents, and kroil. The shafts can bind up if both are not in neutral. |

Re: stuck second/high trans shaft
Fritz, I have a series on rebuilding the tower. Should show removing the shafts in this first video. The last one shows using a spring compresser like the parts houses sell, but improved by me.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BCIpZuxoLpQ Remove the first/reverse shaft if it is free. When you grab the shaft avoid clamping the vice grips between the grooves for the detents. If the shafts are both in place you should only be able to move one shaft at a time. I show the install procedure several ways. Last edited by Brentwood Bob; 03-27-2021 at 12:19 PM. |

Re: stuck second/high trans shaft
Don't know why I didn't think of removing the first/reverse shaft. Both shafts are now out
Thanks for the help |

I also used a punch to turn the shafts after the rivets are knocked out. |
