If you are going to post a question you should pick a less controversial topic like maybe the election or Ford vs Chevy.

Question serves no useful purpose in its present form. What is your question and what are you hoping to get from it? Wayne

The 31 Deluxe Rdst. I got from my dad has the double sided WW. Kind of flashy for sure but it matched my dad.

They did exist in the Model A era (though they were double-sided in those days), so I think it's an "up to you option" if you're not going for points judging at a MARC / MAFCA sanctioned event.

Heck, there are even period photos of big trucks and tractor-trailer rigs sporting WWW tires all the way around !

I think they help increase the visibility of the car in traffic. I have always had them on my antique cars (mostly 1940's).

My Special Coupe came with a set, when they're bald, I will probably go with BW, for pocket-book reasons.

Unless points-judging applies to you, buy what your heart and pocket-book like.

it is kinda hard to tell the color of the walls in a black and white photo, but it looks like you backed up into them when the paint was wet. Just in fun!!

When I was contemplating buying tires, It was 'suggested' that I buy black walls. My brother got into the conversation and thought it would be a crime to put white walls on my brown 29 Special coupe. I bought the black walls. The following year my brother went out and bought white walls for his 31 roadster. Go figure...

I'm debating this right now within my own head. I don't know what the "something" is about white walls, but there is "something". I think that whatever that "something" is, my Washington Blue (originally Brewster Green) roadster would not be as "flashy" without them. At events people seem to be drawn to her. [I]Maybeso I have answered my own question,FLASH! ?

In my opinion, blackwalls match the era of the late 20s and 30s and that fact that the Model A was a working man's car, not a rich man's car... If I had a Packard or Cadillac, sure whitewalls but for me, blackwalls match the historically better. Now to each owner their own, put the tires that fit's your tastes.

I think you folks are missing the question!

With the subject of White-Wall TIRES already having been discussed ad nauseum, Hoogah is doing what his wife asked him to do . . . .

"O.K. boozo, if you think pink is the color we ought to paint the living room walls . . . go online and ask your Model A buddies their opinion of what the color of our living room should be. The pink that you want, or the white walls that I want !"

With the exception of a few Model A’s, white walls have always looked out of place on a Model A in my opinion. I especially dislike them when the color of the wheel is not far from white, e.g., straw or crème colored wheels. Looks odd in my opinion.

At the same time, I don't like any wheel/tire combination that causes people to focus on them instead of the car, e.g., black wheels and white walls look like white rings rolling down the road. Reminds me of an old steam locomotive rather than a car.

I'm thinking it looks like a trailer hitch ball, not a "rub".

I had whitewalls on a '29 Tudor I sold to my sister in law. I had it at my house one day while I was debating on what color wheels/tires for my '31 Roadster Pickup. Whitewalls were out of the question.... until I tried her 19" red wheels w/ wide whites on the pickup. That's all it took. Everyone present chose the red wheels w/ whitewalls. Been that way ever since.

Humble Opinion on Whitewalls:

A. Lots depends on "who" one is trying to impress with whitewalls.

B. With magazine(s) or actual photos of Model A's, with different tires, ask several individuals which do they prefer; for example,

1. Ask both young and senior females; and,

2. Ask both young and senior men.

3. Finally, ask your wife ..... she is in charge .... so do the answers in 1. & 2. above matter?

C. Please let us know what you decide to buy .... thousands of ears are anxiously waiting for one or several individual's "correct" answer.

Well, I was just being mischievous by asking the "innocent" question really. I even used the same set of words found in the title of another current thread that went the same way. Only a couple of guys got it - Todd3131 and Doug V. But that's OK, it's an issue that obviously needs LOTS of discussion.

So, I'm not in the market. I inherited the WWs that are on my original E28 Phaeton when I bought it, and they're still in good knick. I don't mind them. I think they're kind of cheeky/pretentious!

Now let's get back to the opinions!

In the '50's my 48 Ford Coupe and my 1957 Chevy two-door both had whitewall tires because most American cars had WW's then, especially the wide ones.

When the imported sports cars came in in the 50's and 60's they all had BW's because they wanted to identify with rally and road racing cars. In the early 50's the 6 cylinder Corvettes and 50's T-Birds had WW's. By the 60's the muscle cars and imported cars all had BW's because they wanted to identify with track cars, e.g., drag racers and road racers. Even my 40 HP VW had BW's.

its pretty hard to find WW's on modern cars, my BMW and my wife's Lexus both have BW's, they would look odd with WW's.

WW's are pretty much reserved for classic and antique cars like my wife's 29 Roadster, although, when we buy new tires for the Roadster, we'll probably by BW's.

I'd guess that the majority of the people participating on this board, not all, probably grew up in an era when most sporty cars had white walls (late forties, fifties, sixties). If we had a car that didn't, we either painted them on or added those rubber deals that fit under the edge of the rim. Younger people have grown up with cars that never had black walls, so they have a different idea of what a car should look like, or what is "cool."

I have another reason to go White Walls.

The Wife factor has been pretty well established- and mine really wanted
White Walls on my 61 Corvette I was building. Problem is... big brakes and
C4 suspension required 17" wheels, and narrow sidewall / wide tires just don't seem to have 2" white walls any more.

So... Next project was a 1930 Pick up. I promised it would be all original, and
When I got a deal on a set of 5 Firestone WWs... I was all set.
Then I picked up a very nice set of welled front fenders.
So.. what the heck... now I have six White Walls.

Every body says they are hard to take care of I don't get that I have had them on my car since seventy five and other cars also along with white raised letters on my trucks. To clean them all I do is spray them with purple power or one of the other good strong cleaners and wash them at the car wash or a simple scrub brush and since them off that easy. I also have a friend that I help with his collection he has whitewalls on 8 or nine cars and they clean up the same. Secret is to not use westlys that stuff is worthless.

I have gone through my life seriously disliking white walled tyres. Then I bought my Model A. It had been standing for 20-30 years, indoors and sheltered, and the tyres were shot. With my car white walls were the only choice, as with its white roof black tyres would look all wrong. More expensive and harder to source but the correct decision. White walled tyres would look stupid on my other cars, horses for courses.

Sometimes they can give a nice look, particularly if you like flashy. I just love the new whitewalls. Here I am with the W/W's in the rumble, off to the tire center, and upon return. You Decide !

To me certain styles wear WW well, like the open bodies. The large bodies seem nice in black walls, but WW could complement certain colors. Good, bad or indifferent.

So, I'm not in the market. I inherited the WWs that are on my original E28 Phaeton when I bought it, and they're still in good knick. I don't mind them. I think they're kind of cheeky/pretentious!

Now let's get back to the opinions!
Posting the words white walls on this blog is like yelling Frau Blucher in Young Frankenstein, the horse get unsettled at the sound.

Of course you can always seek public opinion -
doing a 'Survey' in the Mall Parking Lot.

Here is how to do it :

- four tires to be mounted - two black walls and two whitewalls
- Passenger side: Whitewall on front wheel, Blackwall on Rear wheel.
- Driver's side: Blackwall on front wheel, Whitewall on Rear wheel.
- Drive to a large Mall and park in the parking lot, close to a main entrance.
- Have a Box Lunch, chips, drink, and a good book or Lap Top Computer.
- Have a "Score Sheet" (Survey) with ink pen handy.
- As you engage in the many conversations you will inevitably have through out the day, invite the passer-bys & admirers to give their opinions on your 'census' sheet.
- When the Sun sets, and both your sandwich and your 'flock' has flown, crank up your flivver (I know it has a starter - but you may have an audience who have expectations) and return home to your 'Man Cave'.
- In your privacy, do the tally. If you like the results - and it agrees with your choice, then you can take it to your wife to show that the public supports you. If the results are NOT what you like, and IS what you wife likes - burn the paper !

And go inside and help your wife paint the Living Room WHITE !

If you enjoyed your time at the Mall parking lot, you can repeat the experience the following weekend. Only this time have both of the whitewall tires on the same side, both blackwall tires on the opposite side. It might make for a 'purer' test result.

And for interesting and informative reading, you can bring the NEW edition of the MARC/MAFCA Restoration Guidelines & Judging Standards !

It all depends on the car. I think 30-31 cars look better with WW than 28-29's. But that's my opinion and you all know what they say about opinions (everyone has one and most of them stink!).

It depends on which vehicle. Owners choice!

the line was drawn in the sand long ago.

Consider, tho, that these are depression-era cars and not too much fanciness was going on then....people were starving and out of work.....and jumping out of hi-rise windows

This is not about then - it is about now.

I know what the cars looked like in the depression years - not pretty. No need for us to keep our cars that way.

So now the question is about the car and the owner of today - not during the depression. The question is rarely about 'authenticity' and 'blue point' show 'correctness'. It is largely about, as has been said over and over again, personal taste.

It sure would be nice to only hear about this question once a year. Preferably when I am out of town.

Hilarious. I only started this thread as a joke, expecting that no-one would really reply, but just grimace! We've reached 45 posts, almost enough for a fence!

And nothing has been discussed that is new or wasn't discussed many times before. This post was not a joke but it was a total waste. Wayne

Here's another influence on my decision-making process...

Back in 1997, I was getting my 1941 De Soto ready for the road. It needed new tires.

To my dismay, I discovered that the only sources for 16" passenger-car tires were the "antique tire" merchants (Coker, Universal, etc.). ( I was not about to put 8-ply truck tires on the car, not that those would have been any cheaper.)

So, now I'm price-shopping for "antique tires"...

To my surprise, I discovered that Sears (at that time) could get Goodyear WWW All-Weather Diamond Tread tires - which were a factory-supplied tire on my car ( either WWW or BW ). They weren't the cheapest option even then, but I figured, if I've got to pay through the nose for antique tires, I might as well get "factory correct" (since they were available).

The successive replacement tires for this vehicle have been Lesters or Firestones, both for price reasons, and the diamond-treads are noisy-running tires.

She's still wearing WWW's....

I might as well throw another log on the fire here. My Town Sedan has black rims. My current set of white walls, all 6, are bald. I took advantage of the deal Coker Tire is offering: free shipping and a free shirt on orders of 4 or more tires. Happy wife=happy life. She wanted white walls.

I already have white walls in my family room. The color matches the cedar planks above my fireplace. The walls in my dining room are off white.

I guess I have a thing for white walls!! ;-)

Ever the Contrarian...

I prefer my white walls either as garage rollers or sprayed black with a product sold at Firestone tire dealers.

Step plates are better used as wheel chocks.

Stone guards hold just the right amount of KingsFord charcoal for grilling !

Ya, they don't get any plainer than your avatar. Why didn't you paint the rims black?

My model A had ww tires with orange wheels on it when I bought it. I needed new tires and I panted the wheels black and went with Black walls. I like WW tires but think my car looks better with Black Walls. Just my 2 cents. I have my wife's permission to say this. Johnny

1. Ask both young and senior females; and,

2. Ask both young and senior men.

3. Finally, ask your wife ..... she is in charge .... so do the answers in 1. & 2. above matter?

I think the correct answer your looking for is to be happy with himself and not anyone else.

This WhiteWall Dog does have amazing resilience! Guess it just goes to show the passion we all have about our cars. And for some, our home's white walls.
