Early 28 Engine
I just picked up an A engine with serial number A86692 with stars before and after. I'd like to verify that this is really an early engine rather than just trust the serial number. Anyone know what to look for to verify that it really is an early 28 engine?

Re: Early 28 Engine
Your engine was stamped and sent to production on April 16, 1928.

Here you go...
The head may be later. There is a casting date in the middle that is 7-30-48. Frank |

Re: Early 28 Engine
Has a forged rear main cap which is correct. Has a small-eared timing cover which is not correct. Should have a five bearing cam but you would need to remove the pan to verify.

Re: Early 28 Engine
Thanks for the insight. Not sure what I'm going to do with it, but I'll probably remove the cylinder head to check the condition of the top end. I sure don't need it for a spare, but who knows...

Re: Early 28 Engine
I took the head off just a while ago. Not sure yet, but it has 4 new aluminum standard size pistons and all new one piece valves. Pistons are still bright and shiny but the valves have carbon on them. Later today I'll clean the valves a bit and tomorrow will check the bottom end. This may be for sale...

New pistons and standard size? Has it been sleeved?

Re: Early 28 Engine
Replacement engines purchased during production could have the number stamped on by a dealer or other shop. Stamp sets were available for Ford engines back in the day. If it was manufactured after production of the model A was over then it would likely be a diamond block with the characteristic casting mark.
Pluck's list is pretty thorough. Most folks set them up as close as possible to OEM but if an engine is already stamped then there is not much that can be done. The frame number is the one that counts the most. |

Re: Early 28 Engine
OK, pistons are standard size (witness std stamped on top), no sleeves, new one piece valves, new fiber cam gear, new adjustable tappets. A couple of cylinder holes still show hash marks from the hone. This has a 5 bearing cam shaft, appears to be re-ground. Per Pluck's paper, Front oil dam is even with the push rod boss, middle dam is low. This, along with the elongated water passage hole places this engine after 3/12/28. Looks to me that the serial number is authentic as far as calendar dates go. If I had to guess, it looks like someone totally rebuilt this block, ran it in a bit, and then stopped using it. I'll try to track down the owner to gain more info.
