Default Cast vs Stamped bell housings

What is the functional difference between a "cast and stamped" bell housing? What makes one work and the other not on an 8BA install?

As far as I know there isn't any operational difference. I use the early stamped one on conversions, because you can weld to them. They make a great bell housong for the Toyota 5 spd truck box and the Ford F 150 3 sp w/OD. Makes a nice inexpensive conversion as everything is Ford. even with the Toyota swap.

Aren't the cast bellhousings for trucks? I think they will take an 11" clutch. The stamped (Mercury) bells can only take a 10". I have both kinds and can check if it becomes important. I have never checked before, because I'll never have anything that needs an 11" clutch! If you stick with a 10" clutch, either will work.

Edit : Mauritz, as Maxwell Smart would say " You beat me by thiiis much!"

I had a 1951 FI that had the stamped bell hsgn now no way of telling if it was original to the truck or not, Don't have the truck now but do still have the bell hsgn.
