39 roof antenna

Hi guys

My 39 has a stock antenna. The one that spins from down position to up with knob inside car. I don’t use the am radio so antenna is always in down position. The problem is wind, highway speeds it always comes off the groove that it sits in when down. I want to remove just the antenna portion and leave the base on roof. I removed both screws front and back but the antenna pole still will not come out. I would think it was made to come out. Especially with screws in back and front. I don’t want to force and break it. Is it also threaded? Any one remove this?

Keep trying - it will come eventually if the screws are removed.
It was slid in there originally - nothing fancy.
It's just taken a set - that's all.
Try some WD-40 or CRC.

Hi Andy, I replaced the original antenna on my '39 CS 15 years ago so my memory is a bit faded but, the open & closed cars antenna's are the same but different. As I recall, there is a spring mechanism in the base where the antenna pivots and locks in the up or down position. That "spring" applies pressure which keeps the antenna locked in either position. When down, the antenna should rest against the plastic clip on the windshield divider. As I recall, there is n adjustment for tension on the antenna. Sorry for the long winded explanation without providing a surefire solution. If all else fails, take a hammer to it.

Vic as always your 100% correct. That is in fact how it works. However I want to
remove the stem/rod, leaving the base on roof. Maybe it’s not possible to remove the rod. But why would Henry have screws on both side of the base? Which looks like there to hold the stem/arm/pole.

Andy if you don't use the antenna why not glue it down with clear epoxy to the plastic piece with the groove. Use something like E6000.

TJ thanks for the idea. Hate to have to ruin the plastic groove the rod sits in. If no one here knows how to remove the rod from the base. I’ll just live with it popping off. Not the worst thing to deal with and the joy of driving the 39 certainly out weighs this very minor issue

Andy, I've never owned a closed car with the roof mount antenna, just my '39 CS and '47 Convertible so I can't address the specifics of any differences between the open car and closed car units. I'm looking at an old Bob Drake catalog but the photos/illustrations in it are about as helpful as a Ford Parts Manual... If it's any consolation, the re-popped antenna (I have on the '47) has never worked properly. When in the lowered position(it's about a 1/4 inch out from the plastic antenna stop.

BTW - I still talk about our cruise up to Big Daddy’s museum, in your 39
