Default Cracked Speedometer Gear Housing

I discovered this while under the car this weekend. I didn't notice any crack when I installed it a year ago. Thoughts on the cause?

Did you (or someone else) replace the gear with the wrong one for the housing?

Tightened down when the gears were not meshed properly

I have 2 or 3 cracked just like it. As mentioned above likely tightened down when not properly meshed. Happened then and happens now. Rod

I would clean it with solvent and use JB WELD.

Charlie,
I'm running an 18 tooth gear on a 3.78 rear end. My speedometer is dead on with my Garmin using this gear.

Thanks Mitch. Another Model A lesson learned. Clearly my mistake as I remove the housing when I grease the U-Joint.

I only removed the gear for the initial filling of the housing. During all the later grease jobs I give the fitting 5 to 10 pumps and call it good.

Thanks Tom. Another lesson learned. This is only the second Spring since the restoration was complete, but I was filling the U joint housing each Spring until grease appeared in the Speedo housing.

You may need to add extra gasket(s) under the housing. That's why if you buy the pack it comes with several. Try the housing without the gasket to see if it sits flush to the tube, not rocking, if not add gaskets till it does.

good advice here, yea clean it up really good with acetone and JB weld will stick to that, just dont make it so thick on the inside the gear rubs the JB weld...
