Default Crank Nut Size...

What size socket will fit the the crank nut on a Flatty? Can't seem to find one that is bigger enough or long enough!

Thanks

I just removed one from a '40 59A the other day and I'm pretty sure it was 1 1/8". It's the one with the gnarly teeth on the front for the hand crank.

Mines the 81A style ('39-'48) with the hand crank teeth.

Definitely not 7/8", bigger than that. 1 1/8" seemed close.

Use one of those big "suggestable" wrenches.

Clark, most I have encountered have been 1-1/8", though I do have one here that is bigger.

I try and pick up odd size bigger size sockets from car boot sales - might only ever need them once but for 50 pence or so who's complaining??

Mart.

Interesting. I checked again and the nut that holds the crankshaft pulley to the crankshaft on my 1953 8BA is 7/8in. Yet when I look in the Mercury Manual 49-51 it says it's suppose to be 5/8-11 x 1 1/8 with a torque of 45-55 ft. lbs for 1951 models only. The manual shows that 49 and 50 Mercs are require 135-145 ft. lbs. of torque.

1949-53 plain bolt 7/8"
1939-48 all with long crank 1 1/8. I use an old Craftsman 12 point deep, as the 6 points are thicker and clumsier and space is limited in the tubular part of 1940-48 pulleys.
1928-38...supposed to be 1 3/8, but they vary. Most sockets that size are 3/4 drive and are collossal heavy things...you can get a 26 mm that is 1/2 drive and not too bulky that will do the job. I think these nuts are very irregular...
