Default Steel Top Coupe??

I have an acquaintance who has a 1930 Coupe, which he claims has only 3,000 original miles!!

Also this coupe apparently has an all steel top - i.e. no vinyl roof. My question is, did Ford make a coupe in 1930 that had an all steel roof? I am not aware of one.

Please advise.

Dick

Many people thru the years have given up on redoing an original roof and simply welded in a piece of sheet steel.

The Budd cab Puckup (Including AA trucks since they shared the same cab) beginning in August 1931 to end, were the only Model As that came from the factory with a steel top.

Pete, When working at the local Wreckatorium, in the '50's, it was common for folks to buy steel roof sections, with "just the right curve, etc." to weld up their roofs. Bill W.

When I got my 1930 Coupe (while in high school in 1970), it had a metal insert in the roof that looked "factory". It even used the bead moulding from the soft insert! Obviously, as I started doing research to begin restoration, I realized it had been added at some time in the prior 40 years, and replaced it with the proper cloth insert.

while it is POSSIBLE that it is a 3,000 mile original, we have seen SEVERAL cars advertised on eBay & elsewhere as very low mileage cars that are obviously NOT what the sellers believe them to be........

as posting #2 says, "pictures please"

I finally got a look at this car today. Strangely the engine had no number (Diamond engine?), so it is obviously not the original engine - I doubt that it had an engine swap with only 3,000 miles on it. You can also see where the top was inserted with a piece of steel. However they did a nice job on it. It is actually a very nice car with a lot of original stuff on it - shocks etc. It also had a lot of non original stuff on it. Ran very nice.

We have a guy in our club with a coupe that instead of chicken wire they used sheet metal, then padding, then vinyl top. You cannot tell it has a steel roof.
