Default 31 radiator removable bottom

Dose anyone know when Ford made the 31 radiator shell with both the top and bottom removable sections? I thought only the top section was removable. thanks, Ed S.

The top/bottom removable inserts are unique to all 31's as I understand it.

I used to have an NOS 31 grill shell. The bottom section was part of the shell. Top was removable.

There were 2 types of 31 shells produced.

Ed wants to know if there is a time difference between them.

One type the upper and lower panels are inserts. The lower section has a spot welded thin trim.

The other style has the upper panel inserted and the whole lower panel is spot welded in place.

I do not know the reason or the timeline.

They made them both ways, top and bottom and top only.

Thanks guys, I was wondering if the difference between the two would be the only reason why some shells had body color top and bottom, as apposed to body color on top and black on the bottom. It seems to me that the shell with the fixed bottom would come to the production line already black. Then someone would assemble the correct color top to match the car.
