Re: Nice fishing trip for all Barners free
No thanks Redneck. Been there done that for number of years. My partner & I (his boat) rode out a few like that . The boat was a wooden 45'er with a high bow. Those waves would go clear over the wheel house & land on the fan tail. The back deck did not have any railing & that is where I worked. Kissed mother earth a few times I can Tell ya. Thanks for the memories but I'll pass.
The idiot standing on the rock taking videos is not very bright. There have been many people washed away gocking at the waves in a storm. |

Re: Nice fishing trip for all Barners free
I went out in a 25 foot cabin boat once of the coast of Alaska(Seward) and the waves were going clean over the boat, needless to say I haven't been back.

Where was this movie taken? Looks too much for me and I thought Lake Erie was bad.

I was married for 42 years but the flathead finally won out. Now my own cooking is just OK, but I have heat in my garage.

Re: Nice fishing trip for all Barners free
I sent this link to my brother in FL who does a lot of boating and here is his reply:
"I thought the boat would either turn over or beach itself but the video ended without knowing what happened." Such an interesting video, but it would sure be nice if we had more information, such as where this took place and the outcome. In such seas, doubt if any help would be possible. I did not see anyone on board the blue boat and also am wondering about the long metal truss with something attached going vertically into the water. Does anyone know what this is? Either way, while I have had several boats and while I enjoy Lake Erie fishing (Erie gets rough at times too), would never even think of going out under such conditions. Which boat has the flathead V8 engine(s)?? Fritz |

Look at the video I think you can make out some one in the wheel house of the blue boat. And as far as the long metal truss >>> I don't know the proper name for it but it has a large metal plate dragging on the bottom or as near as possible it is for stability to help from tipping. What about the boat with the # on the side there is a guy that keeps coming out of the wheel house to Have a smoke LOL ( I think he is taking Pictures.) On the great lakes because the shortness / sharpness of the waves even though smaller in height then the waves on the open ocean they are more severe and cause more havoc with the ships... |

Re: Nice fishing trip for all Barners free
The vertical piece going down into the water is probably a stabilizer. It is shaped in a V flat plate with a weight attached on the bottom. By the looks of the gear I would guess they were either long lining, tuna or sword fish. This is all my guessing not knowing more about them. I do not recognize the registration numbers & the blue boats # are not legal according to my remembrance of C G rules. Toward the very end you can see the fellow in the cabin of the blue boat. I would guess they were crossing a bar entering a harbor & there were some large ocean swells. There are some ports that have nasty entrances to the harbor & you best pay attention to your surroundings. Where I fished Brookings ,Ore was one that comes to mind. You had to time your moves with the swells. The C G practices rescues & the would go out in these conditions & purposely roll their boat over.

Re: Nice fishing trip for all Barners free
At the beginning of the video, it sounded as if the person speaking may have had an English accent. The waves do seem choppier than ocean waves. I recommend that anyone watching this video take two Dramamine pills, or if that is not available, wear a life jacket while watching.
I sold my last boat some years back that I used on Lake Erie (32' Wellcraft Coastal), and was thinking of getting back into boating again until I saw this video. So I guess I will have to settle for the antique car hobby instead! Fritz |
