Default 60 hp waterpump fitment

I can't get the waterpump to seat against the outer gasket. I rebuilt the pump and replaced the rubber inner seal. I don't know why this won't tighten up.
See attached photo.

I have cleaned the housing and even have tried a nos pump with the same result. Any suggestions would be appreciated. This is the straight pumps from a 38 ford.

Do you think you might have mixed matched the tapered housing to the straight pumps?

No, I have the right housing. I have a 37 housing also(tapered). I can tell the difference.

Those tapered housings tend to corrode in the seal area and sometimes with deep pitting. I sand blasted mine and filled the pits with JB Weld. Smoothed everything up and got a good seal.

Are you using a flathead 60 waterpump tool to tighten it ?

Yes I have the proper spanner wrench. Still end up with the same gap.

I had a similar situation 22 years ago on my 37 Tudor 60 hp. I could not get the water pump to seat down tight against the housing. I put (2) of the copper washers between the pump and the housing, tightened it down and 22 years later, still no leaks.

Yea, I guess I'm going to have to double up the gasket and see what happens.
