good use for old 33 axle
I needed a right angled drive for my mill to make up a line bore setup to do the Model A blocks for inserts ,V8 mains and other stuff.
The commercially available right angled drive was nearly $1000, So I thought for a bit and drew up one using an old 33 axle and spider gear to get the right angle gears Made up the shafts today and they turned out nice, will do the housing this week. The steel in the old axle is the nicest stuff to use. the cost of my right angle drive will be under $100,mostly the bearings and seal. Lawrie |

Good lateral thinking Lawrie, I once saw a vat mixer made up of a rear Diff ,one paddle turned one way and the other the opposite using the shaft through a tube ,Ted

Re: good use for old 33 axle
Finished the right angled drive for the mill today, it runs really nice,in keeping with the reuse of old ford parts the bolts that hold the seal carrier on are from the model A fuel tank clamp A-20566,
Total cost was over what I thought at $183.00, mainly the hollow bar cost . still way better than the $1000 Next job is to make up the boring bar and guides. Lawrie |

Very cool, thanks.
What kind of mill is that on? How is the housing attached to the quill? |

Re: good use for old 33 axle
I'd like to see your set up for line boring with an explanation of how you get everything square and on center. Not that I'm going to line bore a block but it would useful information.

Re: good use for old 33 axle
In the next week I will be making the boring bar and attachments to get it in the right place,(this is for the model A blocks we are doing),
I have the bar (30mm dia HT chrome bar) and just need to make up the bits that hold it. I have drawn it up so no worries. My mill is a cheap bridgeport copy, and my drive clamps onto the 100mm dia spindle housing, same as a bought unit. all the rest I made. I will have an exploded view of the drive later next week as I want to take it apart and paint it. I cant do it tomorrow as we are out for the day in our 34 3w,this needs some miles on it as its only done about 850 miles in the last year. Mind you they are predicting a hot 39C day tomorrow. Re: good use for old 33 axle
finally got my boring bar setup finished, this has taken a lot of work but it turned out real great, did a trial run with it on the mill this arfo.
for the boring bar it self I used a 30mm dia chrome bar,I thought it was just H/tensile but was in fact induction hardened, was a job to drill it,but yesterday got some cobolt drills and milling cutters so it should be an easier job. I made all the fixtures to hold the bar in the correct pos in relation to the cam and pan face etc.that too turned out great too. I had some advice from some one on the barn regarding the cutting tool to use on the bar ,but went with an insert tool that I machined to fit the bar. not cheap ,but this was all done to keep the machining in house as I had some bad jobs done by others before. Our plan is to make up 3 or 4 A engines with all new stuff inside , Lawrie |
