Well looking for tips and advice on how to go about fixing small leak from the rivets that surround the shutoff valve. We were dealing with a leaky valve before (now fixed) and now it seems that the tank itself has tiny cracks allowing a small amount of gas out through the 3 rivets. Thanks again!

You are going to have a LOT BIGGER problem if you leave the rubber hose like it is !!.. Get an original type line on it quick..

The real fix is to remove tank and properly fix,not good! Ditto F.M.!

Remove the tank and have a professional repair it. You may not like the bottom line but it's better than a fire.

Step one please remove the rubber hose!!
I had the same problem with my tank. I cleaned the area and cleaned the area again. Then I applied JBweld for gas,been leak free for 2 years. I do check it regularly if the leak returns I will remove the tank and have it Professionally repaired !! You never should have gas leaking.

Agreed, we are getting it repaired; no epoxy or JB weld for this one. We have the body off and want it done right before we re-assemble. 29 Tudor matching numbers with 1973 Title out of Michigan. Not repainting it; long block engine rebuild by Rich at Antique Engine in Skokie, Ill.

I agree with you don’t use any kind of epoxy to repair. I didn’t know the body was off and your doing a restoration. My problem was my car is done just painted and the gas tank was removed and sealed by a local radiator shop.
So I did the JB weld trick. I didn’t want to remove the tank and ruin a new paint job!

I would have done the same thing if it was going to mess up the paint.

Jwilli, I am located in Kennesaw, GA as well. We are nearing completion of our 29 Tudor but are looking for a shop in the area that can check our wiring. Any recommendations?

What would be a proper repair for this problem? Remove the tank and replace the damaged metal? How did they buck those rivets when the cars were new, special bucking bar? Seems like it would be a fun project. Mike

I believe the items riveted to the gas tank (steering column bracket, choke bracket and shutoff threaded insert) were installed (riveted) before the tank was electro-welded up. Before welding the heads of the rivets were accessible for bucking.

Thanks for your answer wrndln. So could an "access" be cut out of the firewall side so as to "tighten" the leaking rivets with a rivet gun? My Coupe always "sweat" fuel from the rivets for the steering column bracket and I never fixed it properly, just smeared a little bar soap on the area and went on for another 6 months. Mike

Strange, I had a problem w/gasoline softening up JB weld to the point where it wouldn't hold.

There is no short cut here to safety! Gasoline is dangerous, and the combination of a gas leak and a rubber hose inside the care is very scary! The pictures U provided depict a home made repair to save removing the tank.

I don't understand the rivets, but then again, I don't understand the rubber hose.

The only real solution is getting the tank removed and taking it to someone who can fix the problem or direct you to a good repaired available gas tank.

There are plenty of posts on tank removal based on the year of your Model A.

You will be much better off, fixing this right, AND GETTING RID OF THE RUBBER HOSE! And having a safe car to drive!!!!!

If you have any alcohol in the gasoline, that will soften the J B Weld.
Straight gas won't affect it.
