Re: Grille angle
The first grill was on the 1932 Ford. Are you wanting the radiator angle to frame? If so, I'd never heard it mentioned, but would guess 90*. The important thing is the hood, cowl, and radiator shell fir together.

Re: Grille angle
That would be the same angle as the lower front corner of either hood side panel. Pretty easy to measure. As Tom said, likely 90 but you could check if you have a 28/29 hood side handy. No need to measure a radiator against the frame face aft of the horns, a bit of a PIA to do as you don't know exactly where the rad top should be with things disassembled.

Re: Grille angle
A while back I was working on the hood repairs and fitment, and I had the radiator, with shell bolted to the frame, and if I remember correct, I had to lean the radiator and attached shell back to meat the heed sides ...
This being said, I don't think the radiator sits at a 90 degree to the frame . |

Re: Grille angle
Any adjustments at the radiator should be straight up or down, never tilted. It sits plumb vertically. I think considering some kind of degree relative to the frame is overcomplicating the problem. Hood alignment in my experience starts at the front and moves to the rear. If you are trying to fit a 29 radiator/hood on a 30 frame, or vice-versa, you'll have a lot of difficulty.

Re: Grille angle
I guess I don't understand the nature of the question, since you simply mount the radiator and line up the hood to the shell and cowl. The radiator rods have adjustment to tilt the top of the radiator.
Are you making something other than a stock Model A? |

Re: Grille angle
On my 29 Roadster and also on my 31 de Luxe Coupe, the radiator stands 90 degrees to the hood shelves. the lower panels of the hood are cut at 90 degrees both fore and aft. I just measured both with a carpenters square. .On the 29 the hood shelves sit at a bit of an angle to the frame toward the front but back where the hood rides it appears to be exactly the same distance from the frame at the front of the hood panel as at the rear. Identical wooden blocks hold it thus. The 31 follows the frame and is square to the radiator shell also, like the 29. If the care has a bit of a rake to it the radiator shell would sit at whatever the angle of the rake is, but to fit would have to be 90 degrees to the frame. The cowl also is 90 degrees to the frame, (I know, nobody asked for that extra bit.)

Re: Grille angle
I am thinking that possibly you are trying to compensate for a bent frame that is throwing your alignment off. That is nearly the only reason I could see for the question. Rod

Re: Grille angle
hey guys, thanks for all the help.
i think maybe when i was messen around with fit, i had put the radiator on first, and since everyone comes to the same conclusion that it should sit 90 degrees to the frame,i most likely had it tilted a bit forward to begin with... 90 degrees to the frame is what im looking for, thanks all. |
