Fordbarn Average Age
I just read in the V-8 Times the average age of its members is 74 years. I would have never guessed that. However I am 74 years old.
I wonder what the average age is on Fordbarn? How old are you? Shadetree 4-4-11 I'll be out of town for the next couple of days. I'll tally the ages up and average them next weekend. Many thanks for all of the response. Shadetree

Re: Fordbarn Average Age
I'm coming up 64, and I never smoked, never did drugs, seldom drink alcohol, and I'm a wreck. If I knew back then what I know now I would've smoked, done every drug possible and drank like a fish. I wouln't have been much worse than I am now, but I sure as hell would've enjoyed it more!!

Re: Fordbarn Average Age
I'm 44. Bought my roadster when I was 19, 25 years ago. I'd say the average age in Australia would be similar to the USA. You really see it when you go to the v8 nats.

This can only mean one thing... you guys that are in the 40's-50's & 60's age bracket need to join the Early Ford V/8 club, this would bring down that 74 year average. I was 47 when I joined now I am 71

Re: Fordbarn Average Age
Ditto, 56.
Thinking back, as the car is apart to refresh a few things, it's 8 years old, and the garage was "pregnant" for about 8 years also, collecting enough parts about 6 years of the time. Seem'd like forever to get it so-called-done, like yesterday when I first legalized it. Time does fly when you're having fun. |

Kinda looks like I'm about in the middle of the pack here (born in '51) and starting to feel it.

I'm just 2 years younger than my truck; bought it in 1957. That makes me 74, Byron.

Re: Fordbarn Average Age
I was born 30 to 40 years too late, I'm 49. I'm suspecting if you took this poll on the Model A and Model T forums the average age would go up?

Re: Fordbarn Average Age
I bet the median age 58 and the average age is 59. Ryan could set up a deal that would do all of the calculations. He does this sort of thing on the HAMB and I think one of them was for age. You should ask him.

Re: Fordbarn Average Age
I'm looking at the age poll listed above and the graphic brings it closer to home. In one year, I'll be in the next to last bar on the graph - the final bar has only 1 person in it! How did I get here so fast. It seems like just yesterday I was wrenching on my 53 Merc conv in Mom's backyard.
I sure got a lot to finish in a short period of time! I'm sure many of you feel the same way but it sure beats laying around waiting to die! In fact, I've noticed many post listing illnesses and most V8'ers come back better than ever. Keeping active may be one of life's little secrets and how could it get any better than fellowship with others of like mind and enjying the the toys we've been blessed with? Just one more comment - I feel the Lord has blessed me with so many friends on here and other forums that have made my life much richer and enjoyable. Thanks guys. Jack 34pu |

I will be 74 in June, it looks like I am average age for the V-8 Times. Will there be a tally of our average age or a tally of the average age of our oldest ride? PS I still like cleavage at my age?

Re: Fordbarn Average Age
I'm 54 and enjoy my mini collection of restored and unrestored Fords of the thirties. I've pondered this "average age" question for many years, recognizing today's "kids" no longer seem to be drawn to an original 1934 or 1937 Ford. While none of us are in this wonderful hobby for the money, it does cross my mind that I might be fortunate to live another twenty-five or thirty or more years and that brings up two possibilities...no market interest at that point of what I've got in terms of "old, slow Fords" or assuming my wife and kids outlive me....what burden will a dozen old piles of rolling steel be to them...?

Re: Fordbarn Average Age
I'm only 61. Ron brings up an interesting point. We may very well be the last of the "old Ford" breed. I think about this alot when I see late model cars beginning to outnumber the pre 48's in many of the magazines I read. I hope to keep my 40 as long as I'm walking ontop of the dirt. I'd like to keep it for my son who was age 14 when I got it. He helped with the build as he could and appreciates the tradtional flathead powered hot rod. When the Good Lord does call,(I hope not anytime soon) I want to be cremated and have my ashes put in the ash tray in the 40. I figure I can still go cruising around with my kid. Glad to see some young members in the group. As well I'm glad to have joined this forum. Good health and long life to all of us. Dan

Attending my 50 year high school reunion in 2012. I'm taking my 24 year old trophy wife. I work out each day, sometimes twice, run marathons, do 75 one arm pushups each day, bench press 285 lbs, and have an 18 year old mistress.

Re: Fordbarn Average Age
Well,I just turned 34... I feel like I'm out of the loop...What would our love of hotrods and the flathead be without knowledge that is passed on from generation to generation? There's nothing I like more than to recieve advice and information from people who have "been there done that".I'm starting my first rebuild of my late grandpas 51 flathead and the info I've recieved here is extremely valuable and well appreciated,so thank all of you out there who genuinely care about preserving the past and passing on your knowledge...Thank you

68 in October. The mind is ok so far, but the body is showing the wear and tear. Some of which was likely too much youthful enthusiasm!

I cant believe this thread has taken off again! Its Cool really ! It started in April 2011 then stopped abruptly in Dec 2011. Started again 2 days ago, now we are all 3 years older we have to start posting again!
Is anyone compiling the stats ? Do we know anymore about us ? The one thing that I have learnt from this site is that there are a lot of really great people out there that are happy to help novices like me about a fantastic hobby of messing with old FORDS whatever we do to in them. Keep it coming guys I think that this site has to be one of the best things that ever happened to the FORD V8 movement! By the way I am only 62 years young and look forward to many more years of V 8 ing. |

Re: Fordbarn Average Age
Age 76; will be 77 in July.
Car #1 bought at age 15 for $60. A 4-door '48 Ford with no reverse gear and a leaking radiator. It worked. It went forward. What fun ! I slept with a flash light and a Clinton's Auto Repair Manual under my pillow. I painted it with a home vacuum accessory sprayer bottle. Car #2 was 4-Door 1932 Plymouth fresh out of a barn with only 1000 original miles on it. A beauty - chromed spring-steel bumpers, chrome Lady flying on the radiator cap, big chrome eye-balls on the front, shiny dark blue body, black cloth top, black fenders, wide running/foot boards, yellow pin striping, yellow wire rims, plate glass, broad cloth interior, no heater or radio, foot rest bar in back, no trunk, spare on outside-back, up-draft carborator, babbit bearings, juice brakes. Talk about all original ! Ran good and strong. Never needed repairs. Had a big-bore powerful 4 banger. Milled the head a little and welded a dual exhaust on the exh manifold. Sounded good and nasty. Showed its back side to many a '51-52 Ford and Merc off the line too. In here for a last round in a lovely restored '47 maroon coupe. Wish I had that '32 Plymouth tranny and diff in it tho - excellent combo of gear ratios. At 76 its easy to digress. Dan |

I just turned 36, but I'd say the average age of most of the people I hang with is 60-75.

Re: Fordbarn Average Age
I'm a young pup at 27. I've been doing the Old Ford thing since I got my '40 Deluxe 2 dr. sedan at the age of 14. This year I'll have had it half my life!
Just recently I've started to appreciate old Fords in stock form. I must be getting older! I know the hobby is in good hands, but at this rate, young guns like myself are going to have a LOT of old cars to take care of! I think in another 15 years or so there may be another "Golden Age". I'd rather keep y'all around so I can keep learning!

60 but feel 90 some days. I did join the Early V8 Club recently. Got my 1st 40 when I was 14 and really stupid. But we sorta learn as we go along, I guess. Wish I still had the 1st and 3rd 40s, but I do have my 2nd 40 today though.

Will be 80 at the end of the month. Where are you folks who drove those old fords back when that was all we had to drive? Presently have a model A and a 36 five wndo. A friend of fine, just down the road, drove his model A to Alaska and back (alone) when he was near 80. We live in N. Lower Mich. No plans to sell yet.

Average Age? 389 replies, so, who is doing the math? Don't forget there are at least three ways of averaging. Some replies are over three years old. Others require subtext math. Any duplicates? And some Barners are not walking around any more. Where is Bruce when you need him?

Turned 57 Back last september. My wife 22 years to my junior thought that she married a old guy but sometimes she says that I act like a 30 year old . She indicated that I am always wound up and wonders how I can keep up the pace.

Now maybe some brave soul should add up all of the ages on this thread and then average them out. Then you will have the average age of all FordBarn people who responded to this thread.

Re: Fordbarn Average Age
I'm 57 now but started playing with old cars when I was 14. My dad let me buy a '40 Buick that I dissected to learn all I could and to restore it. I learned a heck of a lot with that car. I used to attend monthly meetings with the Vermont Automobile Enthusiasts (VAE) throughout high school. I was always the young buck and others would let me ride with them. The group was very welcoming though I don't know where any of those guys are today. One of the members let me drive his 1928 Reo fire truck to the Stowe auto show. What a blast, mechanical brakes and spark advance on the steering wheel. It was pretty neat that I would be trusted as a young driver with that truck. Today, my kids can't drive my cars until they are 25 for the insurance rules.
Add me in as 57 in the year 2015 |

Re: Fordbarn Average Age
It is really gratifying to see younger people (under80) using the Fordbarn!
Now, is anyone trying to compile these data and let us know our average age, how many in the 20's, etc? I would try but have difficulty using the computer for such tasks. Royal |

I think none of us has got time to wait for that calculation, especially now that the age of the thread itself needs to be factored in, not to mention the accounting for the Elvis's who have left the building.

Re: Fordbarn Average Age
Statical analysis is something I have had some experience with. That said, one of the important assumptions of any statical analysis is the "continuity of the statistical universe." In this case there is none. There is no way any conclusion can be determined. These data were gathered over almost a four year period with changes in the statistical membership (respondents entered and left). The only conclusion that can be made is an on-going response to a question posed in 2011 is occurring.

Whatever you'd like the numbers to show, a fair to middlin' statistician can produce the calculations to prove your point.

Re: Fordbarn Average Age
I spend all my time in the Model A forum but saw this thread and figured I'd post over here. 34 years young here and restoring my granddad's 31 coupe. Its been a long process but a fun and rewarding journey. Chassis is all done and now I'm diving into the paint and bodywork stage.

Will be 79 in June. Still have 3 "project" Fords to restore, and 3 finished. I stay young by vintage racing a English Clubman car.

Re: Fordbarn Average Age
Here are the results, current as of today, for the average age on the Ford Barn question. I typed them in an excel spreadsheet, I skipped the ones where ages were given that required thought, like the square root or dog years. Also, I didn’t know this thread was several years old until I got to about page 20 so there are some duplicates, sorry. I only bought my flathead last May so what do I know?
Average age: 60.01 Years Median age: 64 Mode age: 64 Youngest respondent: 19 years old, 32bbflathead - There is hope for the future. Oldest Respondent: 90 years old, 90barnstuf- Thanks for helping to keep this stuff around so that people like me could eventually catch-on |
