Marvelous Ben, PayPal
I just got an email from Marvelous Ben. He wants to buy my 30 Coupe, which I advertised on MAFCA. He says he can only pay via PayPal. Should I be worried?

Re: Marvelous Ben, PayPal
The receiver of the funds gets dinged for their fee, which on a 20K sale is quite considerable.

There are ONLY two ways, green cash in hand OR a Federal bank wire, account to account.

Re: Marvelous Ben, PayPal
I would want cash or a wire transfer.
The last sale I had was for a 1930 Roadster I had listed on Craig’s list in the Seattle Tacoma area this summer in June. The buyer was in New York and he was going to ship the car to France. I put everything on high alert. I quizzed him on what business he was in and asked for a list of the last 10 cars he purchased for export. I called about 4 buyers on the list and found this guy was not a scammer. He would wire transfer a deposit of $1000 in your account within 24 hours and the rest within 10 days. He would arrange for a transporter to pick up the car only after full payment was received. I provided him with the routing numbers for my bank savings, only after a long discussion with my credit union that only deposits could be made and NO withdrawals. I had the $1000 deposit within 24 hours and the remainder within 10 days. On the specified date a transporter showed up and the car went to California for transshipment to New York, and then on to France.

Re: Marvelous Ben, PayPal
A wire transfer to an account with a small balance and only use it for that purpose. Don't give them the #'s of your checking or larger savings account.

Re: Marvelous Ben, PayPal
I've used Paypal for selling a motorcycle once and buying a few vehicles. Outside of the high cost of the receiving fee I've never had a problem. In my opinion it's safe and you have a receipt. Maybe you could do the deposit through Paypal and the rest in check or something.

Re: Marvelous Ben, PayPal
I sold a 29 chevy coupe to a fella in Aussieland. He wtd to pay with paypal-thought he was fake, but he antied up the extra 4% and paid and once the money cleared, I let the car go.
Oh yeah, paid full price to boot, which made me skeptical.... was a good guy. |

Re: Marvelous Ben, PayPal
A friend used to sell a lot on eBay but he had one sale where PayPal took the payment back out of his PayPal account because the buyer complained. PayPal did not ask the seller what was going on in the transaction. So as I understood it you may have the $ from the seller via PayPal but they can come and take it back and return it to the sender. That and with their increase in fees he sell a lot less on eBay.

Re: Marvelous Ben, PayPal
no way.
even if the guy is honest, the slice PayPal takes is TOO MUCH! we bought a car on eBay last month. $500 deposit through PayPal within 24 hours, cashier's check from my local bank for balance to seller when he delivered the car. everybody's happy except PayPal :-)

Re: Marvelous Ben, PayPal
Take nothing for granted, NOTHING, NOTHING, NOTHING! Be VIGILANT! Read NOTHING into it!!
I recieved a COUNTERFEIT business check for $22,000 when I was selling my '30 Coupe. Read about it on MAFCA Scams Page under SUSAN THOMAS! Check seemed legit, bank took it. Googling the business, I discovered the street name of the depositor was wrong, called my bank & told them the check was phony as a $9.00 Bill! I was lucky, only cost me $12.00 service charge. Re: Marvelous Ben, PayPal
Bill is right about the bank checks. I had a good friend that took a check from a well known national bank for $5000. for a motorcycle he was selling. His bank cleared the check and he released the bike. A week latter his bank called and said he had to cover the check that turned out phoney. He is still chasing the guy a year latter. Cash or wire transfer only for me.

Search this site for a previous posting by Cool Hand Lurker, Titled Scam. If this sounds like your man, I think your answer is will be obvious. Good luck.

Ask for his real name address and phone number. Do a reverse lookup and see if everything matches.
