ring and pinion gears + other questions

1. are ring gears interchangable (as long as the same number of teeth are used)?

2. is there special wire that should be used when safety wiring?

3. when safety wiring should washers be added behind castle nuts so the wire
will go thru the slots in the castle nuts?

1) Yes they are interchangeable as long as wear is not to bad-in theory. They will eventually wear in together.

2) No, as long as the dia. is correct. Just not galvanized, it loses some strength-at least that is what I have found.

3) Yes, the slots should line up with the holes. That will keep the nuts from backing off.

I would not use lock washers inside the differential. Sometimes the lock washers break and then chunks of steel are floating around inside.

Try a different nut in that position OR Grind off some of the mating surface of nut to line up cotter key slots.

Grinding mating surface allows nut to turn a little so it lines up.

Ideally they should be, but, many a gear has been changed over the decades. They may be a bit noisy.

A gear pair weren't made matching, they became that way by lapping them till they were. A pair that have not gone through the matching process might be noisy at first but as they work, they will match themselves and get quieter.

Thanks - Patrick L. And Synchro909. I've gat a set that are supposed to come from the same car, but I don't know that for sure. This puts a little more comfortable in using them.

No more than particles from normal wear will do the same! It is always a good idea to change the oil not long after reinstalling something like a diff anyway. Oh, and I have a magnet on the drain pug to collect metallic particles.

Older Datsuns came with a VERY, VERY fine abrasive in the diff oil, to help lap in the gears. It was MANDATORY that it be changed to REGULAR Gear Oil @ 500 Miles. NO FLUSHING was necessary. We used 140 W. oil. But still used 90W, in the trans.
