My main recommendation is the four post lift should have collars around the posts at the end of the crossbars (not inside the posts). If the lift cants for any reason, it could collapse. This is particularly important if the four posts are not anchored to the floor.

Have you had this happen? I have had 7 of the 4 post lifts with the crossbars inside the posts. I’ve not seen any indication of a problem and none have been anchored down.

We had a "situation" once where a car was being let down and one of the locks caught, while the other three were free. The car was leaning as seen in various ads and if allowed to be lowered much further, it could have been disastrous.

It was a combination of mechanical failure and user inattention.

I think that could happen with either style lift.

I bought a trolley jack and can do all that you mentioned. Works by air over hyd. and has safetys built it that locks it in the desired height position, it automatically locks in place on the rails when it is being used.

Just to muddy up the waters a little, we are considering a single post lift that is portable where we can use it in many areas of the shop. Technology in the lift industry has really changed over the years. Now the rage is a single column lift that is mobile much like a pallet jack. You move the jack around your garage (-or into the driveway) and you roll it under the vehicle. Then you swing the arms out and lift the vehicle. These things are strong enough to lift diesel pick-ups too. Very stable although it would not seem like it.

Granted, these are not going to be for everyone, but for the hobbyist that would like to have a lift to maintenance their vehicles in different locations (-especially those who must work outside in the driveway), this is a great option. Here is a link to one brand...

The lifting capacity is 6,000 lbs, so I don’t think that’s enough to lift 3/4 ton or 1 ton diesel crew cab 4x4’s like most guys are buying. It does look handy for cars and light duty trucks.

Don’t buy used.
Hire someone with experience to install it.

I was lucky. The manufacturer was close by. The installer picked it up.

Fine if you only want to lift the front OR rear. I prefer to have complete accessibility without having to move a jack from one end to the other. You also need a building that would support as trolley jack.

Same problem. Getting just too hard to get down and up from a creeper.
Just bought and installed an Advantage lift about three months ago. Quality is good. Welds seemed good, and paint is good. I have been very pleased with it so far.
Two of my friends helped (or I should say I helped two of my friends) install it in a day. Built it outside and rolled it in on it's rollers.
Look at the install video.
Instruction manual is OK, but had a few head scratching errors.
I lifted my 1955 Chrysler Imperial with no problem.. Slow (as all the four posts are), but fast lowering.
I would not hesitate to buy another Advantage four post again.
