Fresh rebuilt 8BA Flathead
Picked up my freshly rebuilt Flathead on Friday. Shout out to Wayne at Coyote Flatheads for a great job.

I often wonder what scale people use to choose the parts they use in their engines. For example why did you choose the Offenhauser pistons and Isky 88 cam for this build. As expensive as it is, these decisions have a big effect on the applicationof the engine.

Man, your engine is gorgeous. I also like the black. It appears to be an 8BA-type ('49-'53). If so, how is it going to breathe (relieve crankcase pressure) without the original road draft tube? Has it possibly been built with a PCV valve incorporated somehow? If that black piece at the rear of manifold is a vent, you must be planning on an electric fuel pump....? Welcome to FordBarn! DD |

Yes, the block was modified to pass the oil out through a filter and then back in. this will be mounted elsewhere once installed in the truck. It was just there to transport.

I don't think so. I could be wrong. My first block was a complete Mercury engine, gave me the crank. The block was rusted from the inside out when pressure tested. This is the 3rd block that was all just a standard 8BA.
The builder drilled and tapped the furthest hole in then drilled and tapped to outer hole to 1/4 pipe. Then tapped the inside line to block the flow. The oil is then goes out the outer hole through the filter and back into the new drilled and tapped hole. If I remember correctly as i was told this filters almost all the oil from the pump before it goes into the engine, except for the rear main bearing. I may not have remembered correctly, but I think that is right. |

Knew a guy with a twin to that engine, including that intake setup. It was in a 50 coupe.
He said it was the best running 8BA he ever owned. Wish you well with it. |

Looks like you do not have any sort of crankcase breathing system in it? I don't see the stock road-draft tube setup and I don't see a PCV . . . does it have one?
If you don't have a custom PCV setup, then you effectively don't have ANY effective crankcase breathing system in the engine. While it will run fine, what it won't do is pull water vapor and combustion gasses out of the engine . . . which is not a good situation for the long term. If it was mine, I'd modify it for a PCV setup - or go back to the road-draft tube setup. Not trying to cause you any drama (that is a very nice looking engine) - just making sure you know about the need/value of a properly setup crankcase breathing system. Ford modified the earlier 24 stud system in 49 - to the later road-draft tube setup. It was a better setup than the earlier integral pan road-draft breather in the earlier engines - but a lot of guys removed them as they can be a bit ugly. BUT - they have a very important purpose that should not be overlooked . . . Best of luck . . . D |

As B&S said, you got to have a proper crankcase vent system or you will have the problems he stated, plus, oil leaks. Picture on left shows engine in my F-1 as bought. Picture on right shows as it is now, many miles later. Leak free and no fumes in cab.
