Default Breaking Muffler Clamps

I had a cracked exhaust manifold and replaced it with a Snyders repop. Tried to reinstall my muffler(not Aries) and had difficult time aligning the two pieces. The flanged end of the muffler was slightly warped and I fixed on it abit and it looked ok. There was a warped connecting sleeve in the connection and I removed it. Still when installing the clamp it snapped in half before it was tight. I put a different clamp on a few days back, took it for a ride and that one broke on the ride when it warmed up. I pulled it very tight to get a good seal.

So, I have broken two clamps. Maybe I need a new muffler???? I generally use sealant--- not sleeves or gaskets. What do you think is going on? It is 50 in northern Indiana and I was hoping for a ride today. That's not going to happen. Thanks

Buy a clamp from Aries. I found them to be a much better quality than the others I have purchased.

1. Read note under Blue colored box on this page.

https://modelastore.com/index.php?ro...&category_id=0

Note above clamp is for 28 -29 ... 30 31 uses different clamp.

Here is 30 31 clamp:

2. Also if clamp is installed up side down it will not clamp tailpipe correctly.

The lower 1/2 of clamp is smaller in diameter than upper half.

3. It is possible to install one half of clamp upside down and one half correctly.

Small side of clamp goes downward that is toward muffler flange.

Actually the clamp is the same but the 1928-29 shows fine thread bolts and the
1930-31 coarse thread. And like Benson said if it is upside down you will break it.

The first thing we do with any of those clamps is throw away the bolts. We put a helicoil in one side and use a shorter bolt. That makes it MUCH easier to get the #$% thing on right. They are VERY sensitive to orientation on a RHD car. Try putting your finger between the clamp and the side cover (when the engine is cold!) and you'll see just how close they are. Now work out what happens when the clutch pedal has to go through there. Unless fitted just right, the pedal hits the clamp bolts. NOT one of Henry's better ideas!

Great idea. Snyder's also sells a clamp similar to what Synchro909 suggests. https://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/no-nut-exhaust-clamp
