Hub bolts/Wheel studs - when to replace?
I have to replace two rear wheel studs/hub bolts due to their threads being toast. I cannot get proper tension on the lug nuts without them slipping.
Naturally this has me thinking (worrying) about the rest. I have visually inspected each one and come to the conclusion that it's pretty hard to tell when the threads have "crossed that line", as there is a range of presentations! Brattons website suggests a wheel lug nut torque of 50-55 foot pounds. Should I just use the torque wrench at that setting and assume that the stud is OK if I get no slippage? How would you make this decision? |

IF I were in doubt, I'd replace them ALL & in the beginning, use a little LIGHT OIL, on the threads.

Wheel studs are cheap. It costs a few $ to remove the old and install the new but overall, the cost is trifling compared to the potential consequences. IMHO.

I agree with Tom W.
See info from Vince Falter's site. http://www.fordgarage.com/pages/dangerouslugnuts.htm Notice that Vince posted this in 2002 ... so problem has been going on for long time. There are many bad nuts floating around at swap meets ... many people trying to purge these junk parts. Last edited by Benson; 05-22-2018 at 09:53 AM. |
