I have a diamond block (no cracks?) block, a recently ground, drilled & balanced crank, new inserted rods from Eubanks and trying to figure out what to do next. Have'nt worked out the thrust yet, interested in what others have done.

Terrific idea. I have a C model 34 ute.
Years ago there used to be a B model forum on one of the Yahoo Groups.
Always interested in Canadian A's, B's and C's.

Don't get me wrong, I did read every post, but is not the reason for the disscussion group to move the specific dissussion there?

Yes, Ted did it for me. It might be a while before I get it up and running, but everything looks great, and as promised with no surprises. Great person to deal with, and kept me updated every step of the way! What a great setup he's got at his new place in Beamsville.

OK, I went there, clicked subscribe, bookmarked the page. Hopefully the group moderator (Vince) will grant admission to a "brother under the pelt." Hey, I like that admissions idea. We all new of a few jerks on the old F-barn, now there's a way to cull the herd?

Anyway, I've got three B engines, all are unfinished works in progress, like just about everything I have. One is a freshly machined .100 over block that I got years ago from Flanegan in Arizona. Remember his "Miracle" engines? It's a miracle that a posse with a rope didn't get to him before he disappeared. Fortunately, the machining dimensions on mine check out, and it is a 'miracle' that he didn't take a shave off the pan rail plane like he did on so many A blocks. I'm waiting to see Rich Falluca's (Antique Engine Rebuilding, Skokie IL) new forged B rods, due this summer.

Engine #2 is a very clean complete diamond block non-counterweighted runner with a knock (babbitt?/ haven't looked yet). I whacked it into the wall last week pushing it on a furniture dolly and busted the original front pulley. Maybe that was a good thing? Still pissed.

#3 is probably a boat-anchor. I don't know, the deck is badly pitted and the pistons are all stuck. For $100 I couldn't say no. Parts donor, maybe.

One will get a Yapp/Riley I have sitting in the box, The other will get one of the two Brumfield "Super" heads (blueprinted, polished 117cc) I had Larry make for me several years ago.

I have a small collection of B engine parts; rods, cranks, pans, dizzy's. Probably all junk, we'll see.

Thanks Vince! I subscribed but am not sure it went through to count me in. I have a B in my '29 Fordor, counter balanced, cross drilled for Dan Price's full oil pressure, pistons measuring .043 with four oil rings, an original Cyclone HC head, V-8 clutch, FS ignition, 3.54 gears and looking to improve some more (B intake with B carb).

My speedster project is a B, counter balanced, cross drilled for Dan Price's full oil pressure, one of Dan Price's last Thomas HC heads, headers, V-8 clutch, FS ignition, V-8 Trans (in the works) with 2 International truck hood body, '29 honey comb radiator, +. It has an Isky cam #590, .390 lift 242@.050 duration and I know nothing about how it will perform. Can anyone clue me in on it?

Thanks! Tom Sieffert

Tom...That's close to an ISKY 400 Jr. It's going to be lope, mid & top end cam, good in a LITE car, run large diameter lifters, B's or larger. Dudley

@Dudley,

Thanks! I got it all buttoned up but it has adjustable Chrysler tappets, big 1.680 intake valves, 1.580 exhaust, new springs, bronze guides and steel retainers with intake ports opened up to 1.625 and aluminum cam gear. It will be going in a boattail speedster (no fenders, Model T runabout running boards, no doors, minimal windshield glass, two bucket seats, only top hood section) - should be light enough! I want it to 'shake' at idle!

Thanks! Tom

IMHO, the social groups splinter and fragment the information flow about our cars.

I may not have a particular car that a Social Group has been established for, but I still want to know what is being said. When somebody takes a discussion into a splinter group, in order to follow what's being said I have to visit that forum. And for Model A topics, there are 10 or 12 or more different forums!!!

The same problem on a worse scale than the old FordBarn vs. Ahooga when somebody would post one place and not the other. But then it was just two places, now it's a dozen and growing!

If Ryan would give us some way of combining a collection of these forums into a single "virtual" forum, I would be pleased. (I have asked for that, BTW.)

Problem is, there is nowhere for the B motor cars to fit in on here.
You have early V8, but no B stuff.
Plus I'm sure there will be discusions about hopping up a B and restorers don't want to hear and see that.So a scocial group is a way to solve this problem.

You can decide for yourself whether it is a benefit or a liability, but you don't have the 'right' to decide for others by campaigning against it. It is no skin off your nose.

Are you against Postal Truck groups, Station Wagon groups, etc for the same reasons?

Mike,
Yes, for the reason above. If it is not necessary to you, then ignore it.
It is pretty easy to follow the "splinter" or "social" groups. Go to your profile page and click on the place where it says "Join social groups". You will be allowed to pick the groups you want to join, and then follow what is going on.

Scott,
Keep V-8ing and 4-banging!

Does the fact that Model A-related information is scattered across a dozen or more forums mean anything BUT fragmented?
Quote:

To expand on your analogy: can the fish swim in more than one school at a time? Probably not.

....
As for "campaigning against" their use, I suspect that is my right. If nobody agrees, I lose. If others do, perhaps changes could and should be made. In fact I offered a solution that would suit me just fine and would affect no-one else. But getting it implemented is probably close to zero.

IMHO, the fragmenting of information is the one serious deficiency of the new FordBarn format compared to the old.

Cool My grandfather had a ride-on Toro in the 70s. I did not realize the company went back that far. Thanks for the pics. With all those B-powered items, don't see why you couldn't join. It's up to Vince though I guess.

I'm delighted to find this exclusively model B site but slightly confused about where to post this need (already did so somewhere else not too far away).

I do need both of the B-6042 special bolts that fasten the radius rod bracket to the flywheel housing. Any ideas?

Thanks for any thoughts.

If I recall correctly, Vince left the barn due to "hard to deal with Barners". So the B Group was discontinued.

Keep 4-banging!

Yup, you recall correctly, from my memory. Sadly, Vince is not the only great talent/contributor who was 'put off' by the petty BS from some. Hope they reconsider, because they helped others, maybe without their even knowing.

The HAMB can be hard to deal with because it is so big and diverse, but the A-B folks have done a pretty good job of centralizing much of the information: There is a Monthly thread started every month that cumulates much of each month's discussion and provides links for other good 4 cylinder material. Once you lock into that series of threads life becomes easier...here's the January 2014 one, which contains at the top quite a few archive worthy links:

http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...monthly+banger

Model B stuff always needs a bit of looking, as the engines are considered orphans by both the Model A and the V8 people...no momma, no poppa, no uncle Henry.

Mike , thanks , think i just joined by following the instructions , Anyone have flow tests & how large a dia intake valves one can fit with out breaking into water jackets ? Just picked up a sacrifice block where a machine shop just cut through each valve hole to fit seats, went so large they got into water jackets then tried to braize each hole up , what a mess ,stuffed a good block , We may slice it to get an inside picture of the casting. Hot in NZ

A engines were used in the Model A from 28-31. They are gravity fed
B engines came in 32-34 Models they have a fuel pump and many "improvements" that make them rated at 50 hp not 40hp like the A. There are lots of differences between them I'm just giving you the Cliff Notes. The search button and Google are your friend if you are interested in a more detailed answer.

I'm not sure if I'm going to use it. This engine was assembled in the late 50's and never run. I bought it from a guy who recently acquired it, took it to a machine shop had it disassembled, tolerances checked reassembled and run.

Let me know if you don't. I'm always on the look out for homemade hop up parts. That motor has some really neat details on the outside. Whats on the inside?

I have a question for the B engine experts.

When a B engine is installed in a 1932-34 Car, it has the exhaust manifold that has a 45 degree outlet at the back. That I know.

When installed in a truck, did they use a Model A exhaust manifold with the 90 degree bend at the back?

No 32 had the small angle (45 deg) 33/34 had a much more down angle easy to mistake it for Model A there was even a very slight change 33-34

B has Fuel Pump boss about where the lower oil drain is located on an A
3-What are the ser. #s
Model B engines typically do not have Serial Number
4-I think you can put an A head on a b block yes- no?
Yes, different water pump
5-can i put an A pan on the B motor
Not without modifications, B pan on A requires removal of rear flywheel cover
6-Can i put the A flywheel housing on the B
Yes
7-Can you use an A dist. in the B
Yes, but the Front timing Pin hole location is different
8- Are the oil pumps differnt
Yes, but an A Pump can be modified for use in a Model B
9-Can someone post pic of A vs B motor

Look on the right side towards the front for a hole for a fuel pump.

Have a dual Burns intake, a pair of Stromberg 81`s, a cast iron Mallory distributor and a Winfield yellow head to my B motor and will get the cam reground for a little more performance. Still have 4 broken studs to remove as well.

Hey HB - I've got more or less the same bits as you - waiting for the cash to get the bottom end built. Let us know how it goes!

Contact Jim Brierley on here for a cam, although I think the last SU1R he had in stock is now in the UK in a friend's speedster

Cheers

Yeah the cash thing....
I have been in contact with Jim and that is exactly my intention to get my cam reground as well as Bubbas for a possible electronic conversion for the Mallory.
After lots of research and comments from the Barn and HAMB, going to leave the bottom end as is and see what happens.

Managed to get the 4 broken studs out. No luck with the welder and ended up drilling them. Going to pull the motor shortly so I can assess the bottom end as well as to stuff some later gears in the transmission.
Also looking for an aluminum side cover.

I have a 1933 model B ford with special heater exhaust manifold that point straight down like a model A manifold. So I guess different exhaust pipes can be custom fit to suit. In fact I have not heater in my car and want to install a standard exhaust manifold, and wonder what types of exhaust piper are available.

I have a diamond B engine in my '28 Tudor and another ordinary B engine sitting in a garage for attention sometime. The one that is going is fully inserted and pressurised, 5.5 A head and a Stromberg down draft carburettor from the 1950's-60's from a Holden grey motor (GM's local car). It sits on an A manifold to which I have braised a fitting on top to take the carb. The motor doesn't go as well as I think it should but I have a B inlet manifold coming for it. I'm hoping the larger bore will help. Alternatively, I have fabricated a new manifold that would feed a much bigger motor.
My favourite engine is an A, fully inserted, Burlington crank and the same carb but on a B manifold, electronic ignition and B grind on the cam shaft. It goes much better than the B engine. I'm about to have counterweights made for an A crankshaft and do another engine with even more punch. Each counterweight will have an extra piece on the rod side to get the most I can out of it.

I saw this while on holiday in Australia recently, in the carpark at a classic/vintage race meet, looks like it may need a bit of work! or maybe no work at all. Each to their own.I like it.

That's the way a car should look. No need to worry about keeping people's hands off it!
I think the owner of this one belongs to the Feral Sports Car Club. Google them and see what fun vintage motoring can be but be prepared to spend some time engrossed in their adventures.

I have a model BB dump truck with the B in it and I am about to install a model b with a 32 transmission in a model a roadster. I'm also adding a overdrive driveshaft as well. I need to figure it all out.
