What Other Hobbies & Interests Do You Have?

We all have one interest in common, but I am curious where other member's interests may lie and how many of us have other things in common. For instance, personally, I collect Stanley collectible woodworking tools, Have a vast collection of Laurel and Hardy memorabilia, and have a love for tall clocks, Herschede in particular. All this and the Model A Ford. I like swap meets, flea markets, yard sales and antiquing in general. Any other ways we can help each other?

I collect and restore military vehicles-from 3/4 ton Dodges down to WW2 bicycles. I've accumulated a herd of British motorcycles over the years,which I've restored,and then often traded for something else. I also like vintage target-grade .22 rifles,like old Remingtons,Winchesters, and Mossbergs. I have also gathered up a pretty good collection of Japanese WW2 swords.

Wow what a varied bunch of people! I forgot to mention old bicycles and tricycles. I ride a '71 Raleigh Tourist, my grandson has an early 50's Murray, my wife has a two-tone and chrome ladies Hiawatha, single springer, another Siebert tricycle... the Bicycles are fun, because usually there is little wear, just clean up, oil and adjustments and they are good as new.

Mostly anything to do with old junk.I have sheds full of old gas pumps,tonic machines and coolers,candy machines,air meters,old garage equipment,signs,etc.I've had piles of old motorcycles,mostly british with a couple dozen Harleys thrown in.My dad had a plane,I really liked that,but I like toys that need no regular feeding to use them once in a while.I can drag out an old bike,tinker it up,and ride off for a few bucks.Then park it again.I have some RC planes,the mini bike and scooters I had as a kid,and lots of guns.My fathers side of the family were car salesmen and gun nuts.You got your drivers license at 16 and your pistol permit at 18.I had old trucks,but got rid of the last one this summer.I still have a few backhoes,bulldozers and tractors around.Motorcycles are my downfall,if I leave them alone I am OK,but once I get a taste I remember and am back at it again.I ride 75-100 miles most every night after supper in the summer.They are worse than drugs,at least there are help programs for drugs.The A's are kind of like that too.Instead of having just one real nice one,I have three on the road,one in a basket to do this winter,and always keeping an eye out for another one.

Daisys were made just down the road from me in Plymouth. The local museum has a section of wood floor from the old factory,with about a million BBs pressed into it. My Dad collected daisys,and after he passed away, I kept an example of each type.

I have been collecting model Texaco Trucks. Texaco started this once a year issue 28 years ago, I have all 27 of the previous issues, #28 is on order. They are getting harder to come by now that Texaco merged with Chevron and there are no Texaco stations anywhere I live or visit anymore.

Then there's the garden, and plastic models of not only cars, but planes that the RAAF operated. I play golf, well not really play, but more walk a lot chasing a white ball as well as cycle.

Aside from the Model A, other hobbies are woodworking which came in handy restoring the Briggs Body and fly fishing. Make my own fly rods, and flies. Think the most fun is finally catching a trout on a fly that you have tied on a rod that you have made.

Actually made out of discard fabric and some sort of resin but yes, they were flimsy and throwaway. When they get wet the bodies get soft and you can actually push your finger into the panels creating a little divot which slowly swells back into shape...

This particular Trabant was one of about 15 bought and used by the Irish rock band U2 back in 1992 on their world tour as part of a stage prop.

Pictures are of the Trabbi in my garage with my '31 and the other is in front of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland where four other U2 Trabants hang in the front atrium.

I enjoy studying the American Civil War and am an active member of the California University Civil War Roundtable. I live in a pre 1800 log cabin, and have restored my grandfather's 1930's gas station. The building that my business is located in was once an Auburn/ Cord agency and sold Atlantic gas. I have collected all kinds of Auto and petrol advertising since I was a kid, but especially porcelain and neon signs...back when people used to give this junk to you just for hauling it away ! Thank American Pickers for the end of that !

Here's a few of my BB Guns. Interestingly enough, the producers of A Christmas Story will not allow Daisy to use the name/logo. The original story was "In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash" written my Gene Shepard, a sometime contributor to CAR & DRIVER. Gene confused the model 25 slide action BB gun with the Red Ryder Carbine as to the "compass in the stock" feature. Daisy made a very limited number of RR's with a "compass in the stock" for the movie. I have one.

In prison, an uncle learned to make fake bark from a mixture of water, newspapers, casein glue, and applied it to shot glasses, hooch bottles, etc. The texture was created by use of a dull table knife, and then brushed with shellac.

So, I got to thinking about my hobbies - and the list was long - so I pared it down to the ones that drive my wife nuts (just kidding - after 25 years, she figures it's just the way I am.)

So other than the Model A Hobby

• Singing Barbershop - Member of the Barbershop Harmony Society for 10 years, member of the Chain Gang Barbershop Quartet for 5 years. The quartet has sung in the local production of The Music Man in 2010 (14 shows), but the best experience was being able to serenade my wife on our 25th wedding anniversary at one of the finest restaurants in town!
• Polishing Rocks - not really lapidary, but close. Tumbling a set of rocks takes about 5 weeks for a good smooth finish. The piles of rocks are placed in trays around the house and at the office for people to 'play with'. When the time is right, I turn these into jewelry on a person-to-rock match, only after I have gotten to know the person well enough to make the match.
• Collecting Weather equipment - specifically antique barometers. I'm a meteorologist by profession (another hobby for pay situation )
• Collecting song books of the Model "A" Era - Community singing was the norm in the 20s and 30s. Many songs from the era are politically incorrect and would never be sung in public venues today. My hope is to one day create a song book that could be used at MARC/MAFCA meets.
• Scale Models - after a long day, nothing quite like putting some small pieces and parts together to form scale models. Makes me feel closer to the creation / production of the original.

So there you go. Whatever my mood - that dictates the hobby.

My first hobby since the ripe old age of 1, Toy Trains, got my first electric train for my first Christmas. Still have it. I am in the process of unpacking my trains and building a new layout since being on a hiatus for the past 6 years. I threw together an quick 4x8 layout to get the juices flowing.

I also enjoy "Blues" and playing the Blues Harp(Harmonica)

My favorite hobby? When? I Loved working in a mine for a while. I loved restoring old Chris Craft, Mahogany speed boats. Until there were no more cheap, easy to be had ones. The same is true of flipping houses, suddenly every body got the idea. Funny, I was never bitten by the motorcycle bug. And then there was flying and my own C-172, till a student crashed it, sigh! Guns and gunshows? Love em', but Jersey de facto ended that! I reallly loved operating a small organic farm for a while till the land, much of it I didn't own was built up and I couldn't shoot the deer that were eating my soy beans every night. The I restored the two tractors, a Ford 8n and a AC mod B. All in all, A lot of great memories. Many of which no one will ever experience again.

And anything else old including: Gas pumps, pictures, guns, farming tools, and my 1929 Model A sport coupe that I cant wait to finish.

Right now most of my hobbies are taking a back seat to raising two girls (5 and 2) and peparing for their newest sibling to be born early next year. Plus, since my A's my commute vehicle, maintaining it takes up a good bit of time and isn't optional.

But in my limited spare time, I collect Edison cylinder records and players and Z scale trains, though I don't have the trains set up at the moment. My MAME cabinet (a very fun, kind of geeky project where you build an arcade cabinet that can play a lot of classic video games) and electo-mechanical pinball machines are other hobbies.

I have been fortunate to have been involved in just about everything with racing or modified engines...You name it, I have done it.
LSR (land speed racing) has been at the forefront most of the time..Although I have been pretty much a spectator since 1956, I joined a team last year that is fielding 3 cars this year.
I also do hound hunting, bass fishing, fast draw shooting, photography,
ham radio, partying, maintaining a tourist railroad's radios and toodling down back country roads in my hot rod at 20 mph so I can see the nostalgia..

I started out almost 30 years ago with a 1929 Pontiac in pieces and soon found a 1925 Model T Speedster that was done. I sold the Pontiac and bought the T. A couple of years later I found a 1930 Coupe and had to have it. I sold the T and bought the A Coupe. I also started collecting and restoring old Victrolas and radios. Here I am all these years later and I still have the Coupe and a nice 1930 Town Sedan. I had and sold a nice 1931 Deluxe Tudor also. I have also amassed a large collection of old phonographs. My ultimate dream is to build a C-Cab style Model A panel delivery and logo it with the RCA Nipper and phonograph. I am still searching for the body plans. UPS used this body style in the past but I haven't had any luck with them finding out about the body plans. If anyone else has any old wind-up outside horn style phonographs or parts available, please contact me with a private message. Thanks!!!!

I live about 40 miles from the start/end of route 66 in Santa Monica, CA. I hope one day to drive my Model A from Santa Monica to ??? on Route 66. When I was 12, my family drove from New York City to Los Angeles (home) in a VW mostly on Route 66. My son and I drove from Dallas, TX to Los Angeles about a year ago in a rental truck. Much of that trip was parallel to or on Route 66. Lots of interesting things to see on the highway.

Beside my Model A and wanting to drive it on Route 66, my other hobbies are gardening, photography, computers (I build my own) and sports (both watching and participating).

"Play" machining of parts for the mod.A . I used to be a Toolmaker/Modelmaker. I can't hear the sound of a plane's engine without looking up. Used to be a pilot too. Number one hobby is getting up each morning. CUSHMAN SCOOTERS I have been very lucky to have road, shown, built, sold, and traded over 350 bikes. I just finished a 1958 eagle last week. I am getting older and slowing down a lot. I have traded Cushmans for a restored 1953 F-100 a 1932 ford roadster and now I have six early fords. I also have vintage bikes Wizzer bikes mustang, Scat-kitty, Doodle bug, allstate moped plus others. Cushman have been very good to me my wife and I have got to travel around the U.S. and meet some very nice people. I still love Cushmans and old fords and read the ford barn ever day.

Beyond my 1919 T and 1931 Town Sedan, I collect airline miles
- not on purpose - it happens because of my job.
It was over 130,000 miles for each of the last two years.

Other small collections are:
A few glass negatives of steam engines that were made by the Mason Machine Works in Taunton MA.
A WWII uniform that belonged to my wife's uncle.
A few sets of HO trains (engines, cars. buildings, etc.) that used to be part of a 6x8 foot layout that was not moved about 30 years ago.
A bunch of auto repair manuals (Chilton, Motors, Audi, Alfa Romeo, 1987 Buick , etc.) - that should find a new home -

Actually, I enjoy any chance to take in the wonderful scenery in Missouri, especially in a Model A, reading history, studying and dreaming about flying, family and grandkids. Well it would appear that most of the folks here collect old. From the Civil War on up things made back in these eras and up to the Model A period were made of quality with the long term in mind. When you own and drive a Model A you realize you are driving a piece of machinery many men and minds built and built well. I collect old! Old cars, old gas station and auto repair equipment. I have too many hobbies that are impeeding the progress on the Model-A.
I bought a '52 Farmall tractor just after starting the model-A and rebuilt it.
Took my youngest son to a few car shows, and he was instantly drawn to Mustangs. It doesn't matter the year, but he loves Mustangs, so when I came across a deal that I couldn't pass up, I bought a '66. We work on it together, and have turned it into a nice driver.
I do a bit of home remodeling, built a mahogany boat, restored an old boat (a couple times), and built a decent little HO train layout for my son.
I enjoy yardwork and I coach a little league team in the summer.
In the winter I like to hibernate, get fat and watch Patriots football games.

Well...being raised in an auto salvage yard and body shop formed me into a life long car builder...but only as a hobby...not my career. I was a private pilot for 25 years, accomplished construction builder of homes and shops . I enjoy woodworking and at one time built and sold 100's of unique birdhouses (wrens only). I also enjoy flying RC airplanes and choppers. Always had auto shop nearby. Oddly enough my career was in law enforcement and corrections....from a beat cop while attending college in 1972 after military to the Director of Correctional Services for 28 years...retiring from same in 2006 at age 57 to play with my toys. I am now enjoying my A and T restoration. Quite a leap from 500hp to 20 and 40!

I am the son of an ABC (now the USBC) triple Hall of Fame bowler. I quit bowling when I was 19 at the urging of my dad (he was afraid I would have trouble with my wife-to-be as serious as bowling was to me). 25 years later I started again. After a year I had a massive stroke. The stroke ended my guitar playing days that I enjoyed beyond words that took the place of competitive bowling. i returned to bowling about 9 months after the stroke with a 279/724 night bowling with my good friend Lou, also a Hall of Famer. Now, I bowl with an ex-tour professional Joe Nuzzo, the best amateur bowler in the country (maybe the world), Adam Barta, and 2 more Hall of Famers, Danny Guerrieri, and Rich Skelton. Last year we nearly set a national team record, falling only some 70 pins short. I could have someone post a picture if anyone wants to see what real bowling looks like.

I do still try to write lyrics and play some but my days of intense blues guitar are finished, thanks to the congenital arterial defect that caused the massive stroke.

About a week ago I jotted down some lyrics about a drag car in a blues/rockabilly style for some humorous fun with Adam and Pete Barta, whom I bowl with on Wednesday evenings. This past Wednesday evening I just missed shooting 300 my first game (thanks to a couple of ten pins), while Adam rolled 300, and then I should have shot 276 the second game but a couple of 10 pins foiled my game, while Adam shot another 300 (his 179th), and then I just fell short again with 279. We set the league high team set and game that night.

I like my hobbies to be far removed from my job skills.

As a teenager I used to build plastic car models in the winter when it was too cold to work in the garage (Vermont) then work on my '40 Buick in the summer. I found that the change from fine motor skill work in the winter to course motor skill work and vice versa was interesting.

These days an an older person, I still like cars and have two. My primary hobby interest includes things made of metal or wood and involve mechanics. I fly planes (PA-32) spend a lot of time following my daughters volleyball sports team, nurture a good marriage that I'd like to keep, and relaxing with manual labor around the yard.

I also have been collecting vintage wrist and pocket watches for over 40 years as well as general antiques and collectibles. I must have been reincarnated from an earlier time, to be so in love with old things.

In an earlier post, I mentioned cars, cash registers, trains.I’m also interested in military history.I’m a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, so I march in parades, attend military funerals, etc.Had over 100 ancestors who fought in the Civil War (both sides), including two that were prisoners at Andersonville.As for cars, 29 phaeton, 31roadster, 55 First Series Chevy pickup, 56 Nomad, 56 Chevy Sports Sedan (4 door hardtop), 57 Corvette, 84 Chevy pickup, 87 Wrangler, 88 Corvette, 2010 Ford F 150, 2012 Lincoln MKX. Note: have never had all of them drivable at the same time—my goal in life.
