Default Front inner race turns on hub

I had a squeak when ever I turn left or right. Well after taking off the front drums I noticed that the left front inner bearing is rotating on spindle. I was wondering if I put tin foil under the bearing would that be enough to take up any slack and would there by any down side to doing this? Otherwise I am down to getting a bearing sleeve or loctight.

Thanks,

Mike

Ok, I sort of answered my own question. I wrapped some tin foil around the spindle and it was enough to stop the race from turning. So, now will the foil hurt anything, or shred?

I would take a center punch and make a bunch of pricks around the spindle
to hold the bearing. Better yet replace the spindle.

IMHO, I think aluminium foil will only be a temporary fix. Aluminium is soft and I suspect it will "flog out". I like the centre punch idea better. If you end up using loctite, take it apart and clean the syrfaces well (I use wax and grease remover from when I paint). One drop of #290, which is applied AFTER assembly is all it will take.

the cone roller assembly should rotate on the spindle, the races should be tight in the hub

if it doesn't creep on the spindle all the wear will be in one place

I would do what Bob-C said...take a certer punch like he said. I just did that the other day for the very same reason. It stops the bearing from spinning.

Take the tin foil out immediately. It will compress, spread, then shred and fill your bearing with shrapnel.

The centerpunch idea works fine if the fit isn't too loose. Otherwise, change the spindle. I have plenty if you want one (you know where they are!).

The inner races should not be a tight fit on the spindle, it shouldn't be wobbly loose either though----- you should be able to slide the bearing on-- off with just fingers

The spindle I am working on (LF), the bearing rotates quite easily and can come off with just a tug of the fingers. The consensus seems to be to stake it with a center punch to stop it from rotating. I have a center punch with a sharp point that should work. I don't think it is a dangerous issue right now and can quite easily go many more miles. I will have to to fix it this winter though.

The RF spindle has a bearing that does not rotate at all on the spindle. I mean it is on there tight and needs a puller probably to get it off. So I will stake the left front and if the squeak goes away then that was the problem. if not I will keep looking.

Thanks for the replies.

Mike

p.s. Paul I will swing up and buy one or two from you later this year.

In addition to the center punch idea, Green Threadlock is your friend. Just make sure all the surfaces are clean. Let it cure for 30 minutes or so, and you are good to go.

I like loc-tite or Threadlocker that is made for that type of problem. Maybe with the punch also.

Nope. Your money is no good here. You just come get what you need and they're yours.

A squeak tells me that something is dry, if there's sufficient grease in/around the bearing and races the bearing shouldn't squeak even if it's loose on the spindle. I would suspect something else is squeaking, possibly the drum is hitting the backing plate or maybe the king pin bearings are dry. Or?

What I am thinking is happening is that as I turn the car the bearing binds and then squeaks. I did not see any worn metal from the drum. Unless the wheel itself is just loose enough to somehow squeal?

.

Your left front is normal, the right front has a problem
