Cam Choice
Putting together a motor for my Huckster. Lion Speed 7:1 head, B distributor Vortex intake, dual Tilly carbs, lightened flywheel, V8 clutch, 3.78 rear, straight thru muffler and 2" tailpipe. Have a B-W overdrive that I may install. What regrind cam is recommended? Maybe one of Jim's C grinds?

The camshaft choice is critical,it sets parameters your other performance parts operate under. Cam choice can greatly affect driveability,part of the parameters it sets is when torque rolls on,cams for pure racing are difficult to street drive with.Cam cost needs to be mentioned as well,new cams run north of four hundred dollars,where regrinds run south of 200.Regrinding A and B cams is viable,they have enough 'meat' to work with.As for spec'ing what you want speaking to cam grinders is important.
I can tell you what I did,my goal was to double the power of the model and keeping it a flathead for street driving.My car is on the light side,a sport coupe. Winfield 7 to 1 head Single down draft 94 reds 4 into 2 header y'ed to a resonator B distributor with 35k voltage coil mitchell 26% OD,3.78 rear ratio I found a really good late B profile high measured lift cam in an engine I bought at a farm auction,measured lift is .319,the B cam came .302 lift too.The B profile allows for a smooth idle yet allows for a higher rpm and torque rise..I'm very pleased with the street performance.I can drive in low range like a stock A and use low shift points,or wind out 2nd low and 2nd high range and perform with modern traffic. |

DB, got your PM, and freplied. Stay on the mild side for touring. My 'C' grind is a copy of the latest B cam, mine has .320" lobe lift and slightly more duration than earlier B's.

I run a cam I have done locally. It is a new grind put on an original A camshaft - not a new one so it is very economical.
Duration is 264 degrees which is significantly more than any of the B profiles but the lift is a modest 0.288". My best engines run that cam with a 5.5 head and downdraught Stromberg (ex Holden grey motor) carburettor. It is with this setup I tow a camper weighing about a tonne behind my Phaeton all day long for days on end at 50 mph. I love driving this car solo too. It surprises many a modern motorist. Can't get the grin off my face even now!

Just wait until the studs start breaking off in the block . This has often been the problem .
