Default Rear Axle Shaft Repair?

I'm working on a '40 pickup rear end. The left side axle has a worn out keyway and is actually broke out at the end. The threads, bearing/seal surfaces and side gear are in good shape.
Has anyone had any luck welding up the taper and having it re-cut?
Does anyone know where I might find a replacement axle shaft?

Thanks,
Paul

Paul, this repair is quite possible but not cost effective. In my opinion, I'd search out either a very good (condition) used axle or a NOS axle.
To repair, the axle will need to be (re) heat treated properly. This is a process that is very costly to do correctly on a "one off" piece.

Put "wanted" ads here, at HAMB (https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/forums/wanted.30/) and at the Early Ford V8 (https://www.earlyfordv8.org/classifi...Wanted&c=Parts) site. Ask at our local Early Ford V8 club chapter and put an ad in their newsletter. Be sure you know how to identify the correct axle. When you find an axle that looks good be sure to have it magna fluxed before installing it. Be sure to run safety hubs or clips when it all goes back together.

Put your general location in your profile!!! A guy in your same town might have one but not want to mess around with taking pictures, giving descriptions and shipping (that sounds like me but I don't have an axle).

I agree that a good used or better yet a NOS axle shaft is the best option however I have been searching and I'm not able to find one.

If you decide to have your damaged axle repaired, I would suggest having that axle magnafluxed to check for cracks on the taped end.

I probably have beautiful used and NOS. I'd need to know exactly what you need. Overall length and number of teeth...
