31 Hood Rods
I have bought new stainless hinge rods for my 31 hood. Installation of the rods for the 2 side panels went easily. However the rod for the center is another story. I assume I will have to remove the small ends that go into the retainers on the rad and firewall before I can drive the rod out. However, these 2 ends don't appear to come out easily and I don't want to damage the hood. Has anyone else dealt with this?

Re: 31 Hood Rods
Remove the pivot at the rear end of the hood, two screws. I think you should take the hood off the car to put the new rod in. I just used a 3/8 inch brazing rod that worked great. Low cost too.
The front pivot bracket stays put. Have someone help you and take your time. |

Re: 31 Hood Rods
Thanks JacksonIII. The hood is off the car. In fact the body is off the car.Maybe I'm overlooking something but it looks like the center rod, unlike the side ones, is held in place by a small tube at each end inserted into the last curl of the hood.

Re: 31 Hood Rods
the original center hood rods are a one piece rolled tube, just drive it out, I like too if possible to drive them out far enough to put a drill motor on the end of the rod and screw it out.

Re: 31 Hood Rods
I made an adapter/attachment for the end of the rod so that I could use my slide hammer.
Pulling seems to be better than pushing since the push can spread and mushroom so that it makes it even harder to pass through. Also some kroil or other penetrant but if maintaining current paint, it would be jeopardized |
