Default Ignition Switch

I would never think that the ignition switch would drive me crazy. The car would drive fine, then the idle would fluctuate, then it would run rough or stall out. This would happen after driving a few miles, not immediately, that's what made it confusing. I would do a complete check on the 97 Stromberg, cant find anything, complete check on the FSI, cant find anything. Checked the grounds, the alternator and starter. Spark, sometimes very good or none. Put the test light to the coil, sometimes a light. I take out the ignition switch, one screw tight, the other JUST A LITTLE LOOSE, even while wrapped with electrical tape. I tightened the one screw, and now the car runs great. Who would think that just a little loose screw would confuse two mechanics and myself.

A BIG problem like a wheel fallin' OFF is EASY to spot. Those "little" things sometime TAX your mind!!!

What switch are you using? The most common one available from the vendors has terminals like Brattons part number 16320.
The end of the switch with the terminals can come loose and cause intermittent contact. I mix some epoxy putty, push the end in tight and force the putty in around it. Hold it in place with a clamp and let it set. No more problems.

It looks exactly like the 16320.
