Re: Clutch Chattering Bad In Low/Reverse
An old Ford trick to reduce clutch chatter is to loosen the bolts holding the clutch housing to the engine just enough to allow it to shift. Start the engine and push the clutch pedal a few times, then retighten the bolts. This will correct any lack of concentricity between the transmission input shaft and the engine. I learned that one many years ago from the old hands at the Ford dealer where I worked.

Re: Clutch Chattering Bad In Low/Reverse
I looked above but did not see...
Check the clutch finger height- put a straight edge on the (Installed) clutch cover, measure to the clutch fingers. Should be the same. Some can have an adjustment, some not- replace cover. From personal experience... Karl |

Re: Clutch Chattering Bad In Low/Reverse
the stay rods are not for clutch chatter. there to hold the eng in place as the rear axle pushes the car .if not there the force would be on the eng mounts. if you want to get rid of clutch chatter check motor mounts. get a clutch rebuild by fort wayne clutch check fly wheel for cracks. all this after market clutch is junk . years ago when we did a clutch job on a ford we would buy a new one from ford ..if the customer wanted clutch chatter we would buy a rebuilt from a parts house. at our shop we use nothing but fort wayne clutch & never have a problem

Fine if you live in or near Indiana but I live in SoCa. Here we use Southland Clutch Exchange. |

Re: Clutch Chattering Bad In Low/Reverse
I am not convinced that Indiana guys are any better. Prefer to deal locally in case there is an issue.

Re: Clutch Chattering Bad In Low/Reverse
I must admit, Fort Wayne Clutch references look good. Van Pelts does too. Seems like you would spend a fortune shipping this stuff back and forth however. I'll check with the Early Ford V8 Club here in San Diego and see where they go. I am sure we have people as good or better. I just hate all that needless shipping.

Re: Clutch Chattering Bad In Low/Reverse
Considering the amount of work to remove and reinstall a clutch, best to "step up" to the best quality rebuilder possible. Someone probably has a NOS clutch and pressure plate for sale. There's 2 on Ebay.

Re: Clutch Chattering Bad In Low/Reverse
I have two of those anti chatter gismos's, they never seemed to work for me. Both of mine are hanging up down in the basement.

Re: Clutch Chattering Bad In Low/Reverse
Problem fixed. Turned out to be motor mounts and loose rods between the engine and frame. Changed all 4 mounts, front and rear. The old fronts were very loose and missing lower washers. Thanks!
