ground strap for car.
Back in the 50'a we used to see aftermarket ground straps for cars. Were they just some old wire hung from a frame or a commercially made clamp/wire/spring, etc.?

Is this what you're asking about? > http://mizter.com/car-antistatic-gro...p-assembly.htm

Re: ground strap for car.
I recall that petroleum tanker trucks had a length of chain hanging long enough to touch the ground.

Re: ground strap for car.
Yes, you could use just a wire but it has to be flexible enough to change direction when driving in reverse.
In my case I fabricated my own out of i/8 inch braided cable bolted to the frame. Or you can purchase the same type rubber ones used back when, such as these on Ebay. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1-1-6x25-Ga...MAAOSwo~dcgpxL Amazon also has 'static straps'

Re: ground strap for car.
Can you use an old fan or serpentine belt to make your own?

Re: ground strap for car.
Supposedly the ones made for the purpose are made up from a special rubber compound that attracts and promotes the discharge of static electricity also don't have any internal threads.

Re: ground strap for car.
Seems like a static strap would have to be able to conduct electricity. Maybe these rubber static straps have embedded fine metal conductors on the outside faces?

Just for the fun of it, here's another static electricity car part.

Re: ground strap for car.
I installed static straps on my car not to prevent shocks or eliminate radio noise but to reduce the airborne dust that is being attracted and deposited on the car body. (It has significantly reduced the dust)

Re: ground strap for car.
I run one of those rubber ones on my 35. I have a daughter who, every time she alighted the car, would get a shock.
One old guy told me that the head mounted water pumps act like little turbines, producing electricity, eating out the aluminum heads. Indeed, one of the major electrolysis eaten places in those heads is around the pump mount flanges. As I'm all for doing anything I can to preserve the aluminum heads, I run earth straps everywhere. Certainly can't hurt!
