Looking for suggestions on installing the radius rod rubber bushing.
I pulled the engine to redo the clutch & have the flywheel resurfaced so had to drop the pan on the 21 stud 34 (I think)& upon removing the oil pan I found an 1" of sludge on this supposedly rebuilt engine. I cleaned it up & put the FT Wayne clutch & flywheel on & buttoned it up & replaced the engine in the chassis. Put 4 qts of 20/50 in went to bed. The next morning I find a pool of oil on the garage floor. Dripping 1 drip every 6 seconds. UGH what now?
I finally got enough strength back to drop the pan while the engine is in the chassis. Drop the radius rod & brake rods, remove the starter ,jack up the engine ,pull the crank pulley forward a bit & drop the oil pan. Success !!! fell right down. Here is were I need the suggestions as the radius rod rubber bushing is shot so need to R&R it. I will order one from Joblot in the morning. Remembering that I put one on years back & it was a bear getting the rubber bushing over the radius rod ball. Anybody have any suggestions?
OH the oil leak is from a rusted pinhole in the rear corner of the pan. When I cleaned all the sludge out I uncovered it. I saw it but it did not look that bad. Just a little pock mark on the bottom of the pan. So I put it back on thinking nothing of it. Now I shall have it welded & have another go at it.
Did I mention that I gettin way tooo old for this crawling on a piece of cardboard. I ain't 18 anymore. Yep I have a hoist but it is 1,000 miles north.

A lot of people have luck using compressed air and an air gun. Blowing air through the ball and shoving it on.

Soapy water in the ball and a air nozzle blowing in the hole in the ball while pushing it on the wish bore ,piece of cake!Just put one in my 39 about a month ago.Phil

B-O-B, I did both my '39's. Here's what I did. I had them up on the lift so that gave me a bit of an advantage but, I coated the ball on the radius rod with some grease, pulled the rod down just enough to slip the rubber ball into the cup on the cross member. I angled the rubber ball so the steel ball would hit the opening on the rubber ball and force its way in. It worked like a charm on both the cars.

Thanks a whole bunch fellas. I really appreciate it. My mind ain't what it usta was. Here is a pic of the culprit hole. That tiny weeny dark spot in the corner of the pan. It went under the partition & into the flywheel cover area & out the cotter pin hole. Now to clean all that oil out of the area so it can be welded.
Slowly but surely I'll get this baby whipped into driving condition. Maybe

Had the same oil leak on my 36 ,what a pain!when I built my garage I planned 10 ft ceilings and put in a 4 post lift.Im turning 75 this year and can not get under the cars like I used to.

Bench pressing that starter & pan is something I am not looking forward to,while laying under that car on a piece of card board. I have a creeper but won't use as I tripped over it(CRS) 3 years ago & dislocated my left shoulder. The doc wants to replace the shoulder BUT I ain't goin for that. Knees are bad enough.

B-O-B, I wish I lived closer. I would slither under there and try to help you out. With 4 of our hands we might end up with two good ones to work with. I just ruined both of my legs trying to start a stubborn motorcycle so I am getting fairly good at laying on my back. Mark.

Hey. At least you guys have a warm climate.
My floor is about 25* right now and 2 feet of snow in front of the doors.

My father had a garage when I was a kid. One of the tools he had was a set of dowels with threads on one end that were the size of the pan threads. They are brass and have spring loaded clips that allowed you to push the pan up and hold it in place so you could put the bolts in. They worked great and I have used then on my V8. I have never seen another set.

They were called VELLUBOLT by Hastings Mfg. Co., Hastings, Mich. There were three sets, Chevrolet & small GMC Trucks, Ford, Mercury, Lincoln, Hudson, Packard and Most other passenger cars and small trucks. Very inventive and a great help working under a car.

Thanks Kahuna have to get me some of that. Careful on that BIG BOB quote I do have some feelings left. heh heh he . You been corresponding with my wife?? My garage here is like working when I was a youngster back in the 40s. Shadetree and minimal tools. probably have three of everything up in Oregon.
Larry the problem I have is lifting the pan or work with my arms over my head since I lost most of the use of my shoulder. I can lift a pretty good load as long as it is below my chest but when it gets higher I lose a lot a of my strength.

First off I wish to thank all for the offers of help & moral support. What a great goup here in the stables.
Ok gals & guys an update on my oil pan fix.
I sucked it up & got the pan & starter in late last night. My body is telling me to R&R today. Might listen to it for once. Maybe gather up enough courage to pour the oil in today though.
Just waiting on the bushing from Joblots, might be in fridays mail.
Could have bought one a lot closer BUT $10.00 for a tennis ball without the fuzz is a bit much I thought. Guess I'm still living in the 50's.
Having the front of the engine jacked up 3" I am in no hurry to fire it up.
Kinda got carried away with the weld repair but bigger is better. RIGHT?
That little oblong dark spot had a pin hole in it. The other pic is my oversized repair. HEH HEH He

Just have to give a big THANKS to larry/Texas for reminding me of the idea about the guides his dad used. I bought 2 5/16 six inch long bolts that were threaded all the way & cut the heads off then cut them in 1/2 & screwed them into the block (2 on each side) I had forgotten about that trick. They worked fantastic as guides & I was able to get a couple of nuts on to help hold the pan in place. Thanks again Larry, much appreciated.
