Distributor cam lube.
My points did not come with any lube for the cam lobes, is Dielectric grease ok to use for this purpose, does anything else need serviced while I have it apart other than a good cleaning? 1947, 59ab motor.
Thanks for any reply's, you guys are life savers. |

Re: Distributor cam lube.
Use high temperature disc brake front wheel bearing grease, just a tiny smear on the cam is all that's required. Regards, Kevin.

Re: Distributor cam lube.
She was a little grungy, spray bombed rotor, dust bowl size drift in the bottom of the cap, when I get it back together with all the new parts and it doesn't start I may have to throw some dirt in it, lol.

Re: Distributor cam lube.
I have a small tube of Sorensen point lube obviously made for that purpose. I take a toothpick, and put a tiny bit on the backside of the rubbing block of each movable point, and wipe across the micarta contact where each touches the cam (you can't see the film there it is so slight), I don't put any on the cam. I then run the distributor for 1/2 hour to 45 minutes on my Sun machine at about 1000 RPM before making my final adjustments. There is no flung lube anywhere and the points are good for thousands of miles.
I have set up distributors for many friends and often see where WAY too much lube was installed and thrown all over the inside of the distributor. As Koates said, it gets hot in there and you don't want oil on the contacts. |

Re: Distributor cam lube.
You could also change over to crab cap, rotor and clips for the cap. Mike

Re: Distributor cam lube.
Standard SL-2 Distributor lube. I would use this grease made for points. You use to get a little package of it with a new set of points. Most auto parts stores should be able to get it.
Distributor Cam Lube Contains Silicone For Longer Point Life Made Specifically For Distributor Cams Applied Every 2,000/2,500 Miles Made In The U.S.A. Add longer life to your distributor cam and points! This special formulated grease is made specifically for distributor cams. It contains silicone for longer point life. A well lubed cam gives better overall performance and reliability. Apply sparingly every 2000 to 2500 miles. Made in the U.S.A.! Last edited by Flathead Fever; 03-22-2019 at 02:01 AM. |

I've been using the lube from one of these Standard Lubricam tubes, for years. Maybe 40 years or so. Sparingly. It seems to work great. Stays on the cam, does not migrate, does not get 'thrown around'. And, when I check the cam every 2-3-4-5 years, it's still there, doing it's thing. It's such a simple idea, I can't imagine looking to anything else. (I also put a tiny (very tiny) dab on the leading side of the points rubbing block.) Re: Distributor cam lube.
Ron, not completely sure what you're using the Vaseline for, but its melting point is between 100 and 130. Good for some things, certainly, but may not be so good for distributors.
(If you smell smoke, be careful fanning the covers.)
