Axel seal damage
I would like some thoughts on repairing the
Gouges left by axel seals on my axels. I have had some spray welded and turned back to standard, 1.135. My next step is to put a hatd chromed sleeve on the seal run. |

Re: Axel seal damage
or find a seal that is thinner or make it thinner so it seats in a different place

Re: Axel seal damage
The seals are inside the axle housings. I have not seen the damage you notice, since the axle can not touch the seal metal housing once the wheel hub is installed. Could you post a photo. Often the underside of the axle housing gets damaged. There is a hard sleeve to repair this damage also.

Re: Axel seal damage
These axles float a little but either way it is common for the rubber in a seal to harden and wear a groove in the metal it touches. Sometimes the seal can be installed so it is in a slightly different position and sometimes stuff needs to be repaired or replaced. Building up the groove and machining I would think be sufficient for a long time.

Re: Axel seal damage
Nothing easier than sliding a Timken Company Redi-Sleeve over the worn axle seal area.

Re: Axel seal damage
Thanks fellows. I will post some picture soon. There doesn't seem to be a sleeve to fit our axels. I have contacted a company here (Can.) they are going to make some and hard chrome them for us.

Looks like it fits to a 32 axle.

Re: Axel seal damage
Sometimes you need to get a little creative and not believe everything you read in the newspaper. Part # 99116 and a hair dryer and it slips right on. 5 so far and no problems.
