Favorite V8 in a Movie

My favorite movie with an early Ford V8 is on TCM now. (Its a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World) My dad always watched it when it was on tv. Sadly, Phil Silvers' convertible doesn't fare too well.

In Harm's Way. The '41 Lincoln gets shot off the road and the "Stunt double" car(Looks like a '46 Ford) takes the fiery plunge. All the cars that pulled up to the party Dec. 6th. Plus that adorable Model A Phaeton that Patricia Neal drove around.

Also the 40 Ford in PT 109 sitting outside the Quonset hut window. Won't mention the Packard that gets strafed and blown up. Also may be wrong but I think its a '41 sedan that delivers Gregory Peck to the Airfield in "12:00 High"

I remember Silver's ford in the river and pretty much everything in that movie. I saw it in downtown Seattle when it first came out and many times since. It is surely a 'who's who' of comedians of the era.

The 1939 Ford rumble seat convertible they trade in for the Mercury. Note that in later mountain scenes the yellow Mercury convertible turns into a heavier yellow Lincoln for those shots.

If we're staying with flathead V8s, the 1950 movie Hot Rod and the star '32 is hard to beat, along with the multi '32 drag race!

I met the guy who has the Phil Silvers Ford at the Eastern Regional in Gettysburg in 2014. I think his first name was Larry. Nice guy. He claimed that the same Ford was driven by Steve McQueen in the 1965 film "Baby the Rain Must Fall"

On a personal note, it was exactly the Phil Silvers Ford that inspired me to buy my 47 Ford convertible. I saw the film as a young man and said to myself "Wow...if I could ever afford a classic car that's the model I'd want" I just loved the lines. After many years I was finally in a position to do it and after some searching I found my 47. I was fortunate to find one in great shape and after some time and effort (and money) I was able to bring it up to Dearborn quality earning the award at Gettysburg in 2014. I still love the lines!

I've met some great Ford folks along the way that have helped immensely with advice and guidance and I am forever grateful to them.

Conversely, the reason my dad loved "MMMMW" so much was because we had a '46 convertible when I was a kid. And that '46 convertible is the reason I just bought a '47 Merc, also sort of fulfilling a lifelong dream. So it all comes full circle.

The 1937 Woody in "The Adventures of Pippy Longstocking" used as the school bus!!! Why, because it's ours!!!! Next would be the Bringing Up Baby 34 Woody, 36 Roaster.

In the movie "Best Days of Our Lives" there are two cars that are my favorite, one a Ford, one a non Ford. There us a Plymouth convertible of about a 1940 vintage - even in bnw it looks great - and there is a short burst of a hopped up flattie powered Mod A roadster that is really cool. Movie was made in about 1946 I think ....

Great movie - the main character won an academy award - and it is my Dad's favorite movie as he came back from WWII and had the same attitude towards my Mom as the main character. A must see in my book ....

I agree Tom. One of the best ever made. Also, Picnic, and The Long Hot Summer.

I loved the cars (the 56 convert was my favorite) and all the old comedians in Mad World but the stunt work that Frank Tallman & his partner Paul Mantz did was legendary. Frank was rough on Beech 18s and it's a wonder he survived all that as long as he did.

Hands down my all time favorite movie is a beautifull color movie of 1947-1948.The Sun Comes Up. A brand new 1947 Maize Ford Sportsman driven by Jeanette McDonald.It also stars Lassie and Percy Kilbride(Pa Kettle) . I cringe in one scene where Lassie jumps up with her front paws on the door,hope she didn't scratch the maple.

How about Lumpy's 40 ford convert on Leave it to Beaver. Also there was a blue 32 ford roadster hiboy used in many Disney tv shows (Spin and Marty) anyone remember that one?

Don't remember a 32 but, If I recall right, the Spin and Marty roadster was the same one used in the Shaggy Dog, but repainted. I think Tex Collins, who made fiber glass T-Bucket bodies, built this car.

All good memories. Another comes to mind. "Picnic" from 1955. These two Capris for example. William Holden really drives that convertible in a few scenes. Picture borrowed from imcdb.

One of my favorites is Drive a Crooked Road (1954). In addition to a brace of early-'50s sports cars it features a 1940 Ford Fordor powered with a "full-race" period-perfect hot-rod engine -- which we get to see on the engine stand before it's installed in the car. The '40 is the automotive star of the story and is essential to the plot.

I wondered if somebody would mention that movie. I last saw it maybe 40 years ago and at the time was not that observant. If I ever see it again I'll be watching closer.

The Woodie Allen movie " Curse of the Jade Scorpion". Has a '34 Ford coupe drive by, as the car shifts it blows a puff of oil out of the tail pipe when a character is in an outdoor phone booth saying an important line. It is like it couldn't have been planned any better.
