i use automotive paint, usually the color of the body, car paint dries hard and fast, wears good, and is easily repaired, ppg or dupont

I'm looking to paint my wheel too. I'm considering automotive paint or appliance epoxy paint.

Used to use lacquer years ago but my current favorite is single stage urethane, it's hard and durable.

I use old fashioned alkyd enamel with a hardener. I do not use a primer. Just sand out any perfections and shoot another coat. Works for me.

To get just the right color I went to the hobby store and bought their small cans of hobby spray paint. Patched cracks and holes, sanded, a couple of coats of primer, two or three of the paint (that was a flat finish as it is for painting model army tanks, ships, planes, etc.), then a couple coats of clear and done.

Mine was in rough shape. I filled the cracks with epoxy, sanded and then a thin coat of catalyzed glazing putty, sanded again, two coats of catalyzed primer, sanded, sealer, base coat then clear. It turned out so nice that I had to make a steering wheel cover for it.

I used bumper paint in a rattle can, a little more flexible than most auto paints, worked great.
