Default What year did Ford drop the rear oil slinger and go to seal?

What year did Ford drop the rear oil slinger and go to seal? This fellow's 21 stud block has cam bearings but the crank has an oil slinger according to him. The oil pan seems to be incorrect as it has the aluminum insert for a rear seal. He swears the crank came out of this block. Need a few experts to chime in.

Im gonna say about 1939 by looking at the big green book. They had two crankshafts one had a B suffix and didnt have a slinger on it.

I'm going to say 46 up had rope rear seal. Every original engine I have seen before that has a slinger. Walt

Wartime engines or late 29A maybe? They are still kind of mysterious.

I have built 39 Mercury engines with slinger type cranks, also with rope seals, so always assumed the change occured in that year. Referring to my Ford of Canada 'Fast Moving Parts Catalogue' ;
part # C91A 6335 seal-crankshaft-rear main bearing oil- upper[type 2] [used to serial #H48-20000 on Trucks] [use with positive seal crankshaft] Pass & Trucks- except 60 H.P. 42-48, Bus 42-48, Tractors 39-48

This would suggest that this change occurred [at least in Canadian V8's] in 1942, however, referring once again to the same publication I read;

Part # 91A 6347 Packing-crankshaft-rear-upper-oil pan-lower [type 2] 2 req'd,Pass & Trucks except 60 H.P. 39-49,Bus 39-47, Tractors 39-47

So...this suggests 1939 model V8's could have incorporated this design, and as I stated previously, I have seen 39 Mercury engines with this design, so I reckon that there was every possibility that both versions were produced between 39 and 42.

I think that's correct. My '42 Mercury engine has the slinger and I think that's when the slinger reached the end of the line.

Apparently they were starting to use the rope seals in some applications starting in 39 but by the end of the war or maybe earlier with the 59A series engine they all had rope seals . One thing I don't understand about all this is the fact that none of the V12 engines from 36-48 had rope seals in the rear,they all had the slinger. Makes me wonder why.

Never say never. My 59ab came with a slinger in it. Found out as soon as I tilted the motor while pulling it. Oil everywhere.

Ron, I have a 2.498 main crank, with the double slingers.

I'm guessing it is a one year only ('38) crank but, maybe there is transition period, into '39?

One thing i learned about Ford parts, They just show up. I went through this when I installed an8BA crank assy in a 37 block. Confusion was a standard state of mind.
